Taiwanese entertainer Alien Huang made headlines recently – though perhaps not in the way he wanted to. Reports that the friendship between Alien and Show Luo turned sour surfaced in November, sparking fierce online debates between the respective artistes’ fans.

While in Singapore to promote his latest album, ALiEN, local media also took the opportunity to ask the 32-year-old about the scandal during a round table interview. Pausing to contemplate before answering, he mused, “(Our relationship) is still the same – it’s always been the same.”

When probed for more, he shared, “To be honest, I don’t really like mentioning him because he’s helped me a lot; from the beginning, I’ve never liked to mention others’ names in my interviews for a simple reason: I’ve always worked hard to attain my goals and I don’t want to ride on others’ coattails in order to gain any sort of advantage.”

“They might not feel this way but others might feel that it’s what I’m trying to do and I’m not comfortable with that. I’ve clarified our situation to the Taiwanese media previously and I don’t want to do that again in Singapore – especially at the risk of harming (Show’s) fans or his reputation,” Alien continued.

“But if you really want to know what our relationship is, I can honestly tell you that we’re like a teacher and his student,” he concluded. Who then, is the teacher? “Show, of course!” Alien responded immediately in mock horror, while the rest of the room burst into laughter.

Show and Alien have co-hosted popular variety show 100% Entertainment from 2006 but the latter recently made the decision to bid the show goodbye to focus more on acting and singing. He had a hand in composing, mixing and the overall production in all of the 10 tracks on his fourth studio album.

With many singers choosing to name their debut albums after their stage names, Alien explained that his decision to do so mid-career was to signal his evolution as a singer. “I’ve been in showbiz for a while; by going back to square one, I might be able to learn more (…) I felt that I needed a turning point, especially since it’s already my fourth album.”

“I started out in 2003 and at the time, idols had a lot of ideals to live by. We had to be a lot more conservative and couldn’t really express ourselves the way we wanted to. I don’t want to be bound by these constraints any longer,” he continued. “It’s alright if you fall behind at the start, not have a good background or not be as good looking as you need to be; it’s only true defeat when you’ve failed at having a mindset of a loser.”

“Many people think that hosting is what I’m best at but I was no good at all when I first started out with 100% Entertainment – what I have today is a result of hard work,” Alien concluded. “When you mention Alien Huang, more than half of those who hear my name will immediately think of me as a variety host. Many overseas media know me because of 100% Entertainment; I’ve already gained a lot from the show so it’s time for me to graduate (after nine years) and pass the baton on to others.”

While he has ruled out taking on any hosting gigs “for the next couple of years”, Alien has quipped that he’d love to return to Singapore to take on acting projects. “I want to but nobody has approached me yet,” he grinned.

Once paired up with Rui En on Channel 8’s 2012 drama Joys of Life and Michelle Chong in 2011 film Already Famous, Alien mused that he will not reject any good scripts that come his way and specially mentioned Rui En as an actress he’d like to work with again.

Alien gushed of his maiden drama role on our little red dot, “I was very fortunate to be able to be a part of the final series (in Mediacorp’s 30th anniversary of local dramas); this project enabled me to work with veteran actors and some of the most talented young stars. I was really blessed to have worked with the best of Singapore’s actors in a single production.”

Ed’s note: Joys of Life is the final part to Wok of Life and Springs of Life.

ALiEN is now in all major music stores and is also available on iTunes.
