Andy Lau recounts “embarrassing” hospital experience

Hong Kong singer-actor Andy Lau fell off a horse while filming an advertisement in Thailand late last year, and spent close to half a year in the hospital recuperating from his fall as a result.

During that period, the 57-year-old was bedridden for two months, and had to request for the nurses to pass him the bedpan whenever he needed to relieve himself. In a televised interview, Andy shared that he felt extremely embarrassed about this during the first two days of being bedridden.

Realising that everyone was simply playing out their own roles in life, he let go of his previous mindset, and became more positive. “You have to be very clear of your role, when you’re sick, you can’t think, ’I’m still Andy Lau’, you can’t fake it. You can only tell yourself, ‘My most attractive feature is my attitude’, in order to to lie to yourself,” he said.

After close to eight months of recovery, Andy was finally able to walk on his own without relying on crutches or a wheelchair. At that time, someone had used the phrase, “to rediscover and change oneself after a great calamity” to describe Andy’s recovery. However, the singer-actor does not feel that he had become better because of his injury. Rather, this incident had allowed him to realise the true meaning of “there will be some unexpected incidents that will ruin your plans, causing you to put everything you’ve planned in life on hold”.

The interview was conducted by television host Vani, a personal friend of Andy. During the interview, she recounted that she once had to take a break from work in order to undergo chemotherapy. After a harrowing seven-hour surgery, the first thing that she saw when she opened her eyes was a fruit basket from Andy, causing her to tear up from joy at the kind gesture from her friend.
