Taiwanese rock band Mayday recently released the music video for their song ‘Tough’, which stars Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Ka-fai.

The seven-minute-long video also co-stars actress Lin Mei-hsiu, actor-director Luo Bei An, actress Vivian Sung and model-actor Chris Wu. With outdoor sets and special effects that rivals that of a movie, the music video was said to cost NT$10 million (approximately S$424 000).

In the music video, Tony plays a retired research engineer who specialised in space exploration. However, he was unable to realise his dream of creating a space rocket. Thus, Tony’s character took on a number of odd jobs, from a construction worker to a dishwasher, to earn money and build his rocket.

In one of the scenes, Tony stepped up to shoulder cement bags that weighed up to 8kg under the hot sun, even walking back and forth as they filmed. In order to achieve an even more realistic look, the 54-year-old also slathered on mud from the ground. The actor also lightened the mood by joking that his look “was not something that special effects makeup could achieve”.

Tony also flew to Taiwan for three days for the video, with filming lasting up to eight hours every day. However, the veteran actor never complained of tiredness, and even personally fanned the child actor who had to wear a bulky space suit during filming.

Tony also revealed that he “has always admired Mayday, even though I have never worked with them before”.
