Uproar over Jimmy Lin’s birthday gift to son

Taiwanese singer Jimmy Lin surprised his eldest son, Kimi, with a Scottish Fold kitten on his eighth birthday but faced unexpected backlash from the public when he posted the pictures on Weibo.

Kimi was holding a kitten in his arms and looking at it in awe in one picture. Another showed him and his 2-year-old twin brothers playing with the kitten in its cage.

Kimi turned 8 last week on Sept 15 and Jimmy revealed that his biggest birthday wish was to own a cat. Being the loving father he was, he and his wife Kelly Chen granted his wish and surprised Kimi with a kitten. The singer hoped that looking after a pet would allow Kimi to learn the meaning of responsibility and what it means to care for another being.

“You have grown so much over the past year, always looking after your brothers and even helping us carry our luggage overseas. On top of that, your front tooth has finally grown out,” expressed Jimmy.

However, many have expressed their disapproval at Jimmy’s actions and deemed it inappropriate. They pointed out that the Scottish Fold belongs to a breed that had a mutation in its genes, hence causing its ears to fold. These cats are very susceptible to diseases and need extra care and attention compared to normal cats.

Netiens felt that it would be too daunting a task to have a child look after such a cat and further added that Jimmy should have adopted one from a shelter instead of purchasing it.

Jimmy and Kimi appeared in the first season of hit Chinese reality show Where Are We Going, Dad?, making Kimi a household name among the viewers.
