Zhang Ziyi demands “ugliest wax museum” to remove figurine
Zhang Ziyi and other celebrities have expressed their unhappiness about the Chinese museum’s infringement of rights
From the pictures, the wax figurines’ facial features, stature and outfits differ greatly from the artistes in real life. “I guess the celebrities will cry looking at the ugly versions of themselves. This is a horror wax museum,” a netizen wrote.
Several celebrities have since stepped forward to state that the museum was not given the rights to produce the wax figurines. “This is too much. We will send a lawyer’s letter to request [the museum] to remove the wax figurine!” Ziyi’s manager exclaimed.
Gong Li’s manager also commented that the actress’ wax figurine is “completely horrible” and that the museum produced the figurine without authorisation.
When contacted by reporters, the general manager of Huaying mountain tourist area said that they have not received any legal documents, while insisting that the venue puts up exhibits for free public viewing and is not used for commercial purposes.
On the other hand, Zhang Shou Xiang, person-in-charge of the wax museum, claimed that “there will definitely be disparity in appearance” as the wax figures were completed 20 years ago. “At the time, we were more concerned about the workmanship. We wanted the figurines to look ‘down-to-earth’, so we did not glamourise them,” he added.
In response to the celebrities’ demands to remove the figurines, Shou Xiang simply replied: “If we need to take them down, we will.”
