A starry night with S.H.E and Aaron Yan in Singapore

Selina Jen, Hebe Tien and Ella Chen swept into town with the former Fahrenheit heartthrob for the Forever Stars 2015 concert yesterday (November 10)

“Doesn’t this feel like we’re at a KTV lounge together?” S.H.E’s Selina Jen remarked excitedly, after she and her bandmates Hebe Tien and Ella Chen led over 7,000 concertgoers in a mass sing-along to ‘Requirement for Loving Me’ (Ai Wo De Zi Ge) at yesterday evening's Forever Stars 2015 concert.

To liken the sprawling Singapore Indoor Stadium to a squeezy karaoke room would be a major overstatement, but the 34-year-old songbird wasn’t wrong. For close to two hours, audiences happily sang along to 19 of the beloved Taiwanese trio’s tracks, which included both upbeat tunes and emotional ballads from across their 14-year-long career.

Kicking their segment off with a nostalgic bang, S.H.E ascended to the platform with 2003’s ‘Super Star’ (yes, that song is already 12 years old) dressed in outfits that, while fun and kitschy, were a lot more toned down than the extravagant getups we’re used to seeing them in during their full-fledged concerts.

The girls stopped to address their fans after performing the more recently released ‘Can Not Wait’ (Po Bu Ji Dai) and another golden oldie ‘Satisfaction’ (Tong Kuai). Ella, who was in town back in April as a guest presenter at the Star Awards Show 2, was the most talkative member of the bunch. “We were here in March and we made a lot of good memories. Are you happy to see us? Then we should return every month!” she exclaimed, as the arena screamed in affirmation. The bubbly bunch last put on a show together in Singapore in October 2013.

Despite the lack of fancy stage effects, props or costume changes, nobody minded one bit: everyone was more than glad to just croon along to the group, who on occasion would point their microphones towards the crowd to encourage them to go on.

Attendees from other countries were not forgotten - S.H.E made sure to include shout-outs to those from China, Taiwan, and of course, Malaysia (after all, Ella’s husband Alvin Lai is from there). “A lot of people write in telling us how far they travelled to see us, and that it’s their first time seeing us despite being fans for many years,” Ella shared. “It always makes us very proud, and we wonder what we ever did to deserve that.”

In addition to the group performances, Hebe also treated us to a short but sweet rendition of ‘A Little Happiness’ (Xiao Xing Yun), her soundtrack for the massively popular flick Our Times. This came after the 32-year-old plugged her upcoming solo concert, to be held here on March 5 next year, and announced that she is working on her fourth album (news that was received with deafening cheers).

Not to be outdone, Selina and Ella also took the opportunity to update fans on their individual projects: Ella is currently doing a musical in Taipei (she invited everyone to come and see her next week), while Selina is flaunting her hosting chops on a variety programme about healthy cooking and living. “You’ve probably never heard of it, but it’s a great show! And it’s not just because the host is good, although that’s also the case,” she quipped.

Determined to close the show on a high note, Ella urged viewers to put their phones on their chairs. “You won’t be needing your seat any more because you’ll be on your feet!” she said. Sure enough, the last three performances of the night, ‘SHERO’, ‘Blossomy’ (Hua You Kai Hao Le) and ‘Genesis’ (Mei Li Xin Shi Jie) had spectators standing up and dancing along, or even running as near to the stage as they could get.

Aaron Yan

About an hour before S.H.E made their highly-anticipated appearance, label mate Aaron Yan threw his second one-man show on our little red dot after last year’s A-Nation gig to get the congregation warmed up.

Looking flashy and fierce in a fire engine red suit, the former Fahrenheit hunk got hearts racing when he sang and danced to opening number ‘No Cut’ (Yi Dao Bu Jian) with a female backup dancer. Plenty of gyrating and sensuous moves were involved, with the twosome even ending their act with a fake lip-lock.

The last time we caught up with the 29-year-old, he told us that he practises a strict diet in order to maintain his physique. Unfortunately, his admirers did not get witness the fruits of his discipline last night (to put it bluntly, there was no stripping or shirt-lifting to ogle at).

What he did bare instead was his soul, with heart-wrenching ballads that included a cover of two English songs: Bruno Mars’ ‘When I Was Your Man’ and Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Don’t You Wanna Stay’. Although his vocals fell a little flat at times, showgoers kept the cheering and clapping going, especially when Aaron uttered flirty little phrases such as “Do you want me to be your man?” and “I love you” between sets.

To our surprise (and slight disappointment), we did not see the powerhouses join forces for a musical collaboration on the same stage (even gathering to banter for a few minutes would have sufficed), but after swaying and singing along to years of sentimental gems, it’s safe to say that everyone went home contented (and probably with an urge to dig out their old stacks of Mandopop CDs).
