Have a look-back on this year’s high-profile weddings and celebrity baby news

One of the most memorable things in Asian showbiz in 2014 would have to be the multiple high-profile (and “flash”) marriages as well as the many bundle of joys that were conceived this year.

In the past 12 months, we have seen numerous celebrity couples, from Singapore and across Asia, tying the knot and/or welcoming new members in their families.

As the year draws to an end, we look back on these headline-making couples and new parents who stole the limelight with their star-studded weddings and adorable little ones.

Vanness Wu & Arissa Cheo

Former F4 member Vanness Wu and his Singaporean heiress wife Arissa Cheo, who held their wedding ceremony in the United States last November, threw a belated banquet at St. Regis Hotel in Singapore on Jan 6.

Prior to the occasion, the couple made sure that no details of the elusive event were disclosed to the media, who could only gather insights from the guests’ social media accounts.

Star-studded factor: High

The guest list comprised of celebrities such as Jaycee Chan, Andy On, Philip Ng, Jimmy Hung, Jeffrey Huang and Gaby Lan. To Vanness’ delight, fellow F4 member Jerry Yan specially squeezed time out of his busy schedule to make a surprise appearance at the Singapore wedding.

Taiwanese multi-hyphenate Lee Hom and his wife Li Jinglei, who were in town for the former’s performance at Ch5’s countdown show, also attended the lavish banquet. The singer presented two songs on stage as a gift for the newlyweds.

Hawick Lau & Yang Mi

After Hong Kong actor Hawick Lau and Chinese actress Yang Mi hastily announced their wedding date last November, the Tiny Times star was widely speculated to be pregnant.

Although the couple refuted the claims, Yang Mi was spotted with a small baby bump in her wedding dress when she walked down the aisle at Bulgari resort in Bali on Jan 8.

Later that month, the newlyweds finally admitted that Yang Mi was indeed three-months pregnant. Hawick also explained that they chose to keep the good news under wraps till the actress passed the first trimester due to traditional beliefs.

Star-studded factor: Extremely Low

Among the 80 guests invited to witness their special day, most of them were the couple’s relatives and close friends. Besides Hawick’s father, veteran actor Lau Dan, the only other celebrity seen at the low-key ceremony was Yang Mi’s bridesmaid, Chinese actress Tiffany Tang.

In June, Yang Mi gave birth to a 3.18kg baby girl, nicknamed “Xiao Nuo Mi” (which means “little glutinous rice”), via caesarean section.

“It’s hard to describe [my feelings]. I’m trying to get used to being a father,” Hawick shared his thoughts on becoming a first-time dad. “[The baby] has the best features of Yang Mi, grandpa, grandma and myself.”

Daniel Chan & Wang Yu Xian

In 2013, Hong Kong singer-actor Daniel Chan played the director of a cosmetics surgery clinic in Taiwanese idol drama Love SOS, where he met local nurse Wang Yu Xian who happened to be on the filming set.

Romantic sparks flew between the two and rumours of marriage started spreading after the couple brought their families on a Dubai trip during Chinese New Year this year.

On Feb 12, Daniel and Yu Xian, who had not registered their marriage at the time, threw a private wedding dinner in Hong Kong. Although the couple tried to keep it a low-key affair, some 50 reporters were seen waiting outside the venue.

Star-studded factor: Extremely low

According to media reports, only the couple’s family and close friends were invited to the nine-table wedding banquet. While speaking to reporters, Daniel announced that his 26-year-old wife was four-months pregnant. But he denied that he decided to marry his wife just because she was expecting their child. “We already had plans to get married,” the 39-year-old actor asserted.

On Jul 5, Yu Xian gave birth to a 3.2kg baby girl in Hong Kong. Daniel, who accompanied his wife throughout the delivery process, shared his joy in a Weibo post.

He wrote: “Both mother and baby are safe. The big one is strong and brave, while the little one is extremely cute. The first day of being a father gives me a sense of realism; the happiness is beyond words. Thanks everyone for the concern and I’d like to pay tribute to all mothers in the world for their greatness.”

Chen Tian Wen & Bao Xiao Hui

After announcing his wedding plans in a Facebook post in March, local actor Chen Tian Wen married his Chinese girlfriend Bao Xiao Hui, who is 21 years his junior, on May 8. In Tian Wen’s words, “a wedding is a form of assurance for his wife”.

Earlier this month, it was unveiled that the couple, who has been trying hard for a baby, successfully conceived their first child. Xiao Hui is expected to give birth next June.

Star-studded factor: High

The elaborate wedding banquet, which consisted of 53 tables of family and friends, was held at Marina Mandarin Singapore.

Tian Wen’s “band of brothers” was made up of MediaCorp actor-host Cavin Soh and young actors from The Lion Men, Maxi Lim, Jasper Lai and Bao Er Cong. The Ilo Ilo star also specially arranged for his wife’s relatives to travel to Singapore for the dinner.

Local celebrities such as Xiang Yun, Chew Chor Meng, Jack Neo, Chen Shu Cheng, Rayson Tan, Kym Ng, Priscelia Chan and husband Alan Tern were also present at the actor’s big night. Tian Wen’s disciples in The Lion Men – Tosh Zhang, Maxi Lim, Noah Yap, Wang Wei Liang and Charlie Goh – even put up a special performance for their mentor.

Blue Lan & Jade Chou

A week before Taiwanese celebrity couple Blue Lan and Jade Chou’s “flash marriage”, the actor hinted at their impending matrimonial union by uploading a photo of a 1.5-carat Bvlgari diamond ring on Facebook.

Dressed in casual outfits, the couple, who have known each other for over 13 years, registered their marriage at a local government office on May 17.

Star-studded factor: Extremely low

For most people, the surprise wasn’t in Blue and Jade tying the knot, but rather, how the lovebirds chose to do without all the glitz and glamour of a celebrity wedding. According to Taiwanese media, only a few of the couple’s close friends were invited to witness the ceremony.

In a Weibo post, Blue wrote: “I am 35 this year, and have passed the halfway mark in life. Today, my other half will join me for the second half of my life. I feel happy and relaxed. Thank you everyone! Welcome Mrs. Lan! Thank you for supporting me during my lowest point and for accompanying me through it all. I am grateful.”

Vivian Hsu & Sean Lee

Our little red dot welcomed another celebrity daughter-in-law, after Taiwanese actress-singer Vivian Hsu and her Singapore-based Indonesian-Chinese beau Sean Lee registered their marriage in a private ceremony in Feb this year.

A traditional tea ceremony was reportedly held in Singapore, before the couple plighted their troth to each other at a lavish cliffside villa in Bali on Jun 29.

Star-studded factor: Extremely High

Amongst the guest list of approximately 100 people, the singer’s celebrity besties including Taiwanese actresses Ruby Lin and Monica Chen, model Cindy Song and former Japanese girl group Morning Musume member Kei Yasuda, specially flew in for the occasion.

The highlight of the night came when Sean serenaded the bride with a self-composed track (lyrics were written by Vivian) titled “Until I Met You” alongside a live band. The romantic million-dollar wedding was concluded by a splendid fireworks display that night.

On Jul 23, the newlyweds held another banquet for Vivian’s relatives and friends at Le Méridien Taipei. Dressed in a pink strapless Vera Wang wedding dress, the bride received warm wishes from her celebrity guests such as Lin Chi-ling, Shu Qi, Chang Hsiao Yen and Jam Hsiao.

Tang Wei & Kim Tae Yong

Chinese actress Tang Wei and Korean director Kim Tae Yong first worked together on the English language movie Late Autumn in 2009. The two remained in contact after filming wrapped, and were reunited when Tae Yong visited China for a commercial shoot in Oct 2013.

The couple caught everyone by surprise when they held a small private wedding at Faro Island in Sweden, the estate where late legendary Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman spent his last years residing, on Jul 12 this year. An avid film buff, Tang Wei had long wanted to visit the place and hence, it was especially significant for her to tie the knot there.

Star-studded factor: Extremely low

True to Tang Wei’s low-profile personality, only two guests attended the informal ceremony in Sweden. “In fact, we hadn’t even planned a wedding from the beginning. The ceremony lasted about 20 minutes,” the actress shared.

In August, the newlyweds threw another wedding in Hong Kong, where only immediate members of their families were in attendance. “Thank you for understanding and encouraging us, even though we couldn’t share all the parts of the ceremony,” said the couple in a statement released by Tang Wei’s agency Bom Film Production.

A year after MediaCorp celebrity couple Qi Yuwu and Joanne Peh dropped the bombshell about their romance, the pair sent shockwaves across local showbiz again when they said their “I Dos” at Movenpick Heritage Hotel in Sentosa on Sep 9.

The couple may have kept details of their big day under wraps, but a photo posted by celebrity hairstylist David Gan – which showed them sealing the deal in front of the Merlion statue – eventually spilled the beans. Another photo uploaded on David’s Instagram showed the back view of Joanne’s bridal veil. “Another one of my daughters is now married,” he wrote.

According to a press release from Artiste Management Division (AMD), Yuwu and Joanne will hold their banquet in 2015, though the couple has repeatedly mentioned that they have yet to set a date for that.

Star-studded factor: Extremely Low

Apart from the couple’s families including relatives and family friends from Singapore and Guangzhou, the only industry insiders who attended the ceremony were David and veteran film producer Daniel Yun, the man behind upcoming local movie 1965 that stars both Yuwu and Joanne.

Valen Hsu & Choi Jae-sung

Nearly 10 months after Taiwanese singer Valen Hsu registered her marriage with her Korean beau “Mr. Big” Choi Jae-sung, a senior manager at S.M Entertainment, the couple finally held their wedding in kimchi land on Sep 12.

The pair met each other via a mutual friend and was first seen together as a couple at Charlie Yeung’s wedding in Singapore last November. Valen sweetly admitted to their relationship in a Weibo post, shortly before news of her engagement broke.

Star-studded factor: High

For the tea ceremony, the newlyweds donned traditional Korean costumes before changing into a wedding gown and suit for the garden wedding held at Aston House, a popular wedding venue for Korean celebrities and where popular K-drama Hotelier was shot.

“The power of love” was chosen as the wedding theme, as it signifies the “miracle that two people born in different countries could meet and fall in love”. That night, Valen surprised her husband with a Korean song “I Am in Love” while Jae-sung performed “She” for his bride.

Valen’s celebrity girlfriends Charlie Yeung, Fish Leong, Tanya Chua and Angela Chang were in attendance at the wedding. Angelica Lee also appeared hand in hand with her husband Oxide Pang, four months after the director’s infidelity scandal.

To express their well wishes for the couple, the ladies put up a lovely rendition of the classic Chinese song “The Moon Represents My Heart” on stage.

At the pre-banquet press conference, the bride was accompanied by popular host Kevin Tsai, instead of her camera-shy husband. While speaking to reporters, Kevin disclosed that he was the one who introduced Joseph to Alice as she is a fan of art exhibitions.

The “Alice in Wonderland” theme of the wedding, which served 36 tables of guests, was entirely designed by Alice, who also hired reknowned Taiwanese chef “Maestro A-fa” (Shih Chien-fa) to helm the kitchen for her big day.

Despite being acquainted for over a decade, Taiwanese actress Ariel Lin and businessman Charles Lin only got together after meeting at her cousin’s wedding in 2012. According to media reports, Charles’s family runs a diving equipment business based in Taiwan and he works at the California branch office.

When Ariel packed her bags to pursue a Master’s degree in London, Charles frequently visited her and the couple even toured Europe together. On Ariel’s birthday last year, Charles asked for her hand in marriage with a necklace to “keep her by his side for the rest of their lives”.

Star-studded factor: Extremely High

On Oct 29 (which was also Ariel’s 32nd birthday), the couple held their engagement ceremony at The Ambassador Hotel in Taipei. A 50-table banquet was held at the same venue in the evening.

The hearty affair was attended by many of Ariel’s celebrity pals including Chen Bo Lin, Rainie Yang, Tiffany Hsu, Cheryl Yang, Joelle Lu, Janet Hsieh, Daniel Chan, Kai Ko, Matilda Tao and husband Li Liren, and Blackie Chen and wife Christine Fan.

Although Ariel’s It Started With a Kiss onscreen lover Joseph Cheng was unable to make it for the occasion due to pre-arranged work, the actor gave the biggest wedding gift of the night – a giant-sized cheque of NT$131,400 (S$5,518) which symbolises “eternity” in Mandarin.

As reported by Taiwanese media previously, Ariel and Charles’ official wedding ceremony was held on Christmas Eve.

This came after rumours about Masa’s relationship status sprung up when he attended the gala premiere of Rise of The Legend in Beijing with a band on his ring finger earlier that week. The 37-year-old, who once dated Malaysian singer Fish Leong, was revealed to be dating Vicky in May last year.

In his Facebook post, Masa shared that the ceremony was held in the company of the couple’s close friends. The bassist also posted a photo of him holding his wife’s hand which showed the matching tattoos on their ring fingers. “I hope we walk hand in hand towards the next stage in life. No matter what, I know we will never let go of each other’s hands,” he wrote.

The couple’s union was greeted by warm wishes from Mayday fans and his bandmates. Mayday’s leader Monster even dedicated a Facebook post to give his blessings to his member, claiming that he only found out about Masa’s “flash marriage” from the papers.
