You know a show is going well when fans are still hyped up and even welcoming the idea of the concert running for another hour - three hours after it first started.

Such was the case at Sandy Lam’s PRANAVA World Tour in Singapore, held last night (July 23) at The Star Theatre. At about 11pm, the Hong Kong pop diva was taking song requests from listeners, and was bombarded with a whole chorus of suggestions.

“We’ll be here until midnight!” quipped the songstress, who - unbelievably - turned 50 last April. “What time is it now? [The audience shouts an answer that is very obviously a lie] 8pm!? You guys are so cute. (laughs)”

Although enthusiastic concertgoers didn’t get their wish of enjoying a much longer gig, it’s safe to say that they left the venue satisfied nonetheless. After all, it had been four long years since she last performed in the Lion City, and they were ready to welcome her back with open arms, loud voices, and a willingness to get up and groove to the upbeat tracks (a male fan in front of us unabashedly leapt to his feet to dance even though he was the only one in his vicinity to do so, until his companion finally joined in).

While the concert location was much smaller than the previous one in 2012 (the Singapore Indoor Stadium), that certainly did not mean a watered down presentation. Dramatic background videos, spectacular lighting effects and a full team of dancers and musicians (including her beau Jun Kung on the drums) still gave the congregation a visual and audio feast.

And of course, there were Sandy’s vocals, still as crystal clear and pristine as they were when she debuted in the 80s.
