Hong Kong screen siren Carina Lau’s 49th birthday bash on Sunday night saw the attendance of celebrities such as Brigitte Lin, Faye Wong, Cherie Chung, Vicki Zhao, Jacky Cheung, and Eric Tseng.
At the party, reknowned Taiwanese magician Lu Chen gave a special performance while Hong Kong Heavenly King Jacky Cheung presented the song “New York, New York” as a birthday gift to the actress. Known for his low-profile personality, Carina’s husband Tony Leung stayed throughout the event to show support for his wife.
Carina was especially thankful towards Faye, who specially flew to Hong Kong for the party despite the media’s attention on her reconciliation with Nicholas Tse. During her speech, however, the actress jokingly reprimanded Faye for not “giving her face”.
“All guests are welcome to come up on stage. If you are my friend, you’d naturally sing for me. But there are some friends who wouldn’t [do it] even if I ask them to, just like Faye Wong,” she said.
Carina then went on to rant about how she had to stop herself from inviting Faye’s ex-husband Li Yapeng and current lover Nicholas, calling her good friend a “troublesome guest”.
“My words are sincere. I really wanted to invite Yapeng but it seemed very ‘inconvenient’. I wanted to get Nicholas to come as well, but Faye was concerned that he would steal the limelight,” the actress explained.
When the party concluded, several guests including Hong Kong director Johnnie To and Hong Kong entertainment magnate Peter lam left the scene in a drunken state. According to media reports, Eric Tseng was so intoxicated that he had to be transported out of the venue in a wheelchair.
