Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi’s role in the movie The Grandmaster gave the thespian her 12th Best Actress award at the 14th Chinese Film Media Awards held in Beijing last Saturday.
After the Hong Kong production was released last year, Ziyi has bagged several awards in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The latest addition helped her break fellow actress Zhou Xun’s record of 10 awards with her role in Chinese movie The Equation of Love and Death (2007).
Ziyi expressed her joy during the acceptance speech and said, “I have received 12 awards. This number is a very special number for the Chinese – the 12 zodiacs, 12 months in a year. This award is an end as well as a start for me!”
Thereafter, she left a message on Weibo: “This 12th award represents the repeat of cycle of birth between me and my role. Its end is a new start! Without director Wong Kar-wai, Tony Leung, the millions of audience and fans, there would be no awards. Let’s all go back to basics. I look forward to the next cycle (of a similar achievement) and I will work harder. To all who love me, I love you!”
In addition, Hong Kong actor Nick Cheung won the Best Actor award with Unbeatable while director Johnnie To attained the Best Film and Best Director awards with his movie Drug War.
Local production Ilo Ilo scored big at the ceremony as well, winning the Best Screenplay award while actress Yeo Yann Yann won the Best Supporting Actress award. The film led the ceremony with six nominations – on par with The Grandmaster.
