JYP Entertainment will be forming a girl group through a survival reality show, Sixteen. 16 of its female trainees, out of which four are Japanese and one is Chinese, will be competing to make the final cut, in which seven will debut as the label’s new rookies.

The current trend among companies seems to be deciding their upcoming groups’ lineups through survival reality shows, with YG’s WINNER and iKON being formed after competing on Who Is Next: WIN and MIX & MATCH respectively.

Kara’s new member, Youngji, was also chosen through Kara Project, in which seven girls were pitted against each other to be added to the Hallyu girl group. The recently concluded No.MERCY from Starship Entertainment has also given rise to a new seven-member male group, MONSTA X.

This will be the label’s first female girl group since miss A debuted in 2010 with ‘Bad Girl, Good Girl’. Sixteen is slated to air its pilot episode in early April.
