Four things we hope to see at the K-Pop girl group’s next concert in Singapore

Apink returned to Singapore for their first-ever overseas concert: Pink Paradise in Singapore. Kicking off the concert tour earlier this year in Seoul, they made history on our little red dot with tears, smiles and a promise to return again soon.

The sextet expressed their nervousness at the press conference prior to the concert while sharing numerous times how thankful they were to be able to perform for their fans at a solo concert at long last.

“I’ve never imagined that we would be able to see so many fans greeting us and preparing so many presents early in the morning so I was sincerely grateful for them. We’ve always dreamed of having our own solo concert so this is a dream come true for us,” Eunji expressed.

While the girls did exceedingly well at Pink Paradise last night, the girls are undoubtedly still on the rise to reach their full potential and we picked out the four things we hope to see at their next concert in Singapore.

More L.O.V.E. LUV

Fittingly kicking off their concert with ‘I Don’t Know’ – the song that first introduced Apink to the world – the sextet looked slightly nervous on-stage until they came to their third track, ‘Mr. CHU’. The sudden surge in fan chants for their hit song visibly surprised them and the smiles on their faces widened at the immense support that the audience displayed.

The phenomenon was duplicated for their other hit songs such as ‘LUV’ and ‘NONONO’ but tapered down when it came to other lesser known tracks. Calls for the girls to return to the stage for their encore also lessened considerably shortly after they were started – though, to be fair, this is a mysteriously regular occurrence at most K-Pop events in Singapore.

With the love and support that fans have given to them even from the airport, we felt that the vocal encouragement that the audience could have shown at their milestone concert could have been a little stronger.

On a more positive note, some members were driven to tears when the three fan support projects were executed during ‘SECRET’, ‘WISHLIST’ and ‘April 19’ with banners and white lights respectively. Kudos to the project planners who ensured every seat in the house was provided with the banners and instructions prior to the concert.

Apink in pink

Apink had no less than five outfits last night, but one was glaringly missing – the girls all decked out in pink. They donned white, yellow and blue sets and we held our breaths for what we thought would be the most elaborate and outstanding outfit – only to be left scratching our heads at the end of the night.

Don’t get us wrong, they looked radiant on-stage with their carefully planned outfits, but one other minor detail we felt they could work on was the materials used for their outfits. The plasticky outfits we spotted – especially when they were dressed out in what was otherwise the cutest Disney princess getups – would look even better if it was made with fabrics that were less jarring.

We’ve loved many of the outfits that we’ve seen the girls promoting in – so we’re sure their stylists are more than capable of giving them the ensembles they deserve.

Fewer language barriers

They say that music is the language of love, and the fans clearly enjoyed every moment the girls belted out their hit tunes. When it came to the comment segments, however, it seemed as though that the transmission of love was put on hold until the next track played.

While a translator was present for the press conference prior to the concert – much to the joy of the 300 lucky fans that were chosen to observe the proceedings – Apink was on their own for the entirety of the concert.

Na Eun did a great job translating the members’ words and all six of the girls tried their best to express themselves in English. However, we somehow got the feeling that the band had plenty more to say but didn’t have the ability to make themselves fully understood by the mostly English speaking audience.

Squeezing in English lessons to the Apink’s already-packed schedules (leader Chorong revealed that they are intending for a comeback sometime this year) would probably be unfeasible, but we’re sure that fans were thankful for all their efforts regardless.

More solo stages

We were impressed by the solo stages that the Apink put up last night – from Namju’s rendition of Christina Aguilera’s ‘Dirty’ to Bomi’s take on Ariana Grande’s ‘Problem’.

Laughs were heard around the venue when a series of video messages were played while the girls were going through their costume stages when they dressed up as their respective idols (Rain, S.E.S.’s Bada, Beyoncé, Seo Taiji, Kim Gunmo and Lee Junghyun) to give messages of encouragement to themselves for their first concert tour.

Given that they put down their perfect girl group images to record those segments – albeit for a fleeting moment – what we felt would have gotten even better reactions would be for them to appear on-stage in those getups for a song or two.  Bring on the epic.
