Seo Kang Joon is one of the hottest rising stars in the industry now - and for good reason. His latest project as the devil-may-care, yet caring Baek In Ho in Cheese In The Trap has earned him a steady increase in fans.

That, however, hasn't caused the self-professed introvert to become big-headed. "I had a fan signing event in Korea a few days back but it was cancelled because the crowd was getting out of control. The venue was quite small and I never expected so many people to turn up that day," he explained.

"When I arrived in Singapore, there were so many fans at the airport to welcome me and at that moment, I realised how much love they have for me and also how my popularity has grown," the 22-year-old continued.

Flanked by an entourage on his maiden visit to our sunny shores, he first met the media at the Conrad Singapore before holding a public fan-meeting at Suntec City.

While his team followed him closely for his schedules, they were surprisingly laid back and let him handle all questions on his own. Questions on relationships and love were also allowed - a rare occurrence that we took the chance to pick his mind about.

"I've been paired with older artistes for most of my projects, so people automatically assume that I'd do well with an older women," Kang Joon mused. "But in reality, I don't have a preference for any particular age or type - everyone is equal to me."

Would he reject the idea of dating a significantly older woman then? "I acknowledge that I'm known as a noona (older lady) killer," he grinned. "Maybe also because I've been lucky enough to have worked with so many, I find myself getting along well with ladies who are older than I am."

As for his character in Cheese, which has caused many a viewer to experience a dramatic bout of Second Lead Syndrome, he shared, "It was easy for me to get into character when faced with a one-sided love for Hong Seol, maybe because I've been in numerous such instances in real life before. Instead of protecting them like (my character) In Ho, I just watched from afar and kept my feelings to myself."

While filming for the drama has wrapped, the actor shared that he is excited to go on the reward vacation to Phuket for the entire team. The scenic island was recently visited by the Reply 1988 team.

As to whether or not he's worried that PD (producer-director) Na Young Seok will kidnap him for another edition for reality show Youths over Flowers (like what happened to Ahn Jae Hong, Ryu Jun Yeol, Go Kyung Pyo and Park Bo Gum of Reply 1988, who were whisked off to Africa), Kang Joon was taken aback, quickly looking for his manager for assurance. "He won't do that to us, will he?" he instinctively responded.

After a short pause, he grinned, "Actually, I think that would be a pretty good idea. I haven't been to Europe before so if he kidnapped me to somewhere like Paris, I think I'd end up enjoying it a lot."

What's his favourite local delight? Chilli crab, of course. Chicken rice is also on his to-eat list, but durians are a no-no because the smell is too unique.

"There weren't any problems playing characters that were of the same age with Park Hae Jin, who is about a decade older than I am," Seo Kang Joon explained. "Everyone was very supportive and helpful; the two of us are even good friends now," he grinned.

On his future drama plans, he shared that while the people around him have suggested that he play a vampire because of his milky skin, the actor would rather transform into a character "who gets to put on a school uniform while I'm still young".

His fellow 5urprise members rarely comment on his acting projects, but this time around, they surprised him by praising (albeit in a roundabout way), "Your character's interesting".

"If I were a girl, I'd choose In Ho over Yoo Jung. Why? I play In Ho so I'll always support him no matter what," he declared.

Fun fact: Seo Kang Joon understands English really well - he fielded questions like a pro, not needing the translator's help for most of those posed to him throughout his visit.

Cheese in the Trap is currently airing on VV Drama (StarHub TV Channel 855) every Sunday at 10pm.
