Hello cropped tops and short shorts!

Summer’s arrived and that can only mean one thing: fun, summery and psychedelic music comebacks by your favourite Korean groups.

Take SISTAR’s ‘Shake It’ for example, the loud and colourful MV (music video) is not only attention grabbing in terms of the bright colour scheme and pop-art comic book theme, but also because of the rockin’ bodies that the girls show off with their flirty dance moves – all for summer.

The same goes for NS Yoon-G’s ‘Honey Summer’, which is literally the epitome of the sun, sand and sea, especially since it’s shot at the beach. The MV shows her swinging from hammocks, going on a yacht ride, surfing and indulging in all sorts of beachy fun. She even gets to change in and out of different sets of beach wear for the video as she flaunts an enviable bikini body that we’re sure was perfected with the help of intense gym sessions and diet plans.

She’s not alone in this - Korean idols and singers are required to look good as part of the whole summer, beach vibe package too. Here, we look at what they do to get ready every time they return to the K-pop scene.

Girls’ Generation changes diet for comebacks

After teasing fans with a colourful comeback preview of three new songs, S.M. Entertainment has officially announced that Girls’ Generation will perform their new songs ‘PARTY’ (which drops tomorrow) and ‘Check’ on this week’s episode of KBS’ Music Bank. Plus, their new album coming out later this month will have a double title Lion Heart and You Think.

While they’ve yet to share how they prepared for this comeback, the girls are known for focusing on sports instead of dieting.

Regarding the ‘SNSD Diet Plan’ that was revealed on SBS’ variety show Stars, What Do You Eat?, the girl group’s meal plan consisted of only small amounts of vegetables, five pieces of broccoli, 100g of chicken breast and 150g of brown rice.

However, a few of the members refuted this claim as a false report and Yuri clarified that they take “a lot of nutritious, healthy food three times a day” while “working out regularly”.

Fellow member YoonA added that reports of the ‘SNSD Diet Plan’ are unsubstantiated and assured that the members are eating well and are “healthier” than most would expect them to be.

Girl’s Day’s Minah can go on scary diets eating “just a handful of snacks”

Fans finally got to see the quartet’s fashion concept and teaser for their new MV ‘Ring My Bell’ which releases tomorrow – ‘60s mod monochrome swimsuits and adorable fluffy hats!

In the teaser, the girls displayed their super long legs and Sojin even showed her toned obliques through the two cut-outs on her swimsuit. Their latest album LOVE also drops tomorrow in lieu of their 5th anniversary.

Sojin was once rushed to the hospital when she faced breathing difficulties after rapidly losing 4 kg for her impending comeback activities back in 2011.

Just last year, Minah needed to lose the weight she gained from eating five meals a day when she was filming the variety show Eco Village for their summer comeback ‘Darling’. To do so, Sojin confessed that “when she (Minah) goes on a diet, it’s scary. She can manage through a day with just a handful of snacks.”

9MUSES survive on paper cup-sized meals

9MUSES is one of the many girl groups who just made a summer release this year. Their fourth mini-album 9MUSES S/S Edition dropped last Thursday after their new MV ‘Hurt Locker’ came out the day before, where the girls dance in matching outfits and showcase their perfect bodies from head to toe.

And just how did they maintain their excellent shape? The girls once shared their ‘paper cup’ diet – the ultimate portion control method: Eat only the amount of food you can fit in three paper cups for every meal. The group suggests fruit, brown or mixed-grain rice and a non-salty/greasy side dish respectively.

The girls felt that it’s all about playing tricks with your mind, filling the cups to seem as if you’re getting a “full” meal. They also stressed the importance of eating three meals a day and regular exercise.

SISTAR’s Dasom sticks to one

With their recent mid-June comeback, the girls are probably putting some extra effort into maintaining their slim and sexy figures as they have plans to perform at various different countries this season. In fact, we even saw them on our sunny island for a performance and meet-and-greet last Wednesday.

Dasom’s (far right) usual diet is already very extreme – just one meal a day. She also revealed that she went on a ‘one food diet’ to lose 10 kg in 3 weeks, eating nothing but cucumber. True, you’ll get tired of the same food, but it also means you’ll eat less overall, according to Dasom who said that she felt “very refreshed and healthy” throughout being on this diet.

Another idol who’s stuck to one is the singer from Superstar K2 Park Boram, who followed a tomato-only diet and underwent an amazing transformation since her days as a contestant.

AOA’s Seolhyun thinks she is “like a real vampire” when she diets

One meal a day sounds insane for most people, but that’s just part and parcel of what an idol like Seolhyun (middle) needs to do, especially in preparation for their June 22 ‘Heart Attack’ comeback.

“Dieting was so hard for me. I wanted to quit. They wouldn’t let me eat what I wanted and I always had to write down what I had eaten and check my weight morning and night.”

Seolhyun revealed that she was also required to diet before playing the female lead role as a teenage vampire in her new drama Orange Marmalade.

“Like a real vampire, I didn’t eat anything that I had to chew and swallow, and just drank liquids for my diet.”

Ailee capped it at 500 calories

The singer made headlines last Tuesday with her collaboration with Brave Brothers on the new standout single ‘Johnny’, showcasing her amazing vocal chops and leading up to her comeback album with the same title which released today.

The 26-year-old keeps fit for comebacks with her dance-and-diet method, which actually helped her lose 10 kg last year. “Each day I thought I was going to faint, but I wouldn’t,” admitted the singer with a laugh.

Ailee stuck to 500 calories a day – 100 grams of protein and two cups of vegetables twice daily. While quick and extreme weight loss methods have proven to work for some of these artistes, we also saw the singer pile on lost pounds after stopping the programme, resulting in what is called the “yo-yo” effect.

Keeping up with KARA

The newest member of KARA Heo Youngji confessed in a radio interview that she disliked her pre-debut body shape and thinks that she has to work hard to keep up with the other unnies (older members). In fact, she admitted that she felt she looked comparatively chubbier next to her group mate Goo Hara (who admitted to undergoing beauty procedures). As a result, the winner of the KARA Project TV show in 2014 embarked on an intensive weight-loss regime and has lost 10 kg since then.

One might think she’s achieved her slimmer physique by starving herself, but we’d be wrong to think so. Her advice? Keep to 1200 calories a day.

In the same interview, Seungyeon revealed she went down two pant sizes and lost over 4 kg while Gyuri lost about 7 kg.

KARA’s weight loss habits:

1)      Reduce carbohydrate intake and eat foods with high vitamins
2)      Eat chicken and sweet potatoes for dinner
3)      Dance practice makes up most of their exercise

An additional tip: Ex-member Kang Ji-young’s high protein diet plan is to eat one to two chicken breasts per meal along with vegetables and fruit.

2NE1s Dara doesnt stop

For 2NE1’s 2013 comeback, Dara said that even after they came home from a workout session with their trainer, they would do 10 more sets. What determination!

CL said that investing in herself and spending half an hour a day meditating has helped her with the pressure, while maknae (the youngest member) Minzy’s weight loss advice is simple: Decrease carbohydrate intake.

Remember the ‘one food diet’ we mentioned earlier? Well, 2NE1’s Park Bom has also tried this diet and suggests watermelons or sweet potatoes instead of rice, but usually sticks to her strict vegetable diet of salads and grilled corn. Apparently, corn is the ultimate secret to her sexy, slender legs.

We’re glad to see she’s achieved her goal now as Park Bom was always the one being harped upon about her diet by her trainer Hwang, who monitored her meal plans. As she was always a woman who loves eating, he gave her permission to eat five times a day – three heavy and two light meals.
