We look at how the members have changed and stayed the same 10 years after the group’s debut

It’s hard to believe that Hallyu icons Super Junior celebrate 10 years in the industry today (Nov 6); it seems like just yesterday they debuted with ‘Twins’ and shot to international superstardom with ‘Sorry Sorry’.

The last we saw of them as a group, they were in Indonesia to wrap up their Super Show 6 tour – but not before bringing the house down in Singapore. It may be some years before we see the group performing as one again, with Donghae and Eunhyuk enlisting in the army last month, Siwon slated to go on Nov 19 and youngest members Ryeowook and Kyuhyun reported to follow suit next year.

Before we end up needing tissues just thinking about how long it will take the group to grace our shores again, we take a trip down memory lane to look at how much – or little – the members have changed since the group’s debut.

Making today even more special, their label S.M. Entertainment has established Lable SJ, which will handle all their group, unit and individual activities. Album production, management and operations will also be carried out by this exclusive label.

Here's to the group's great decade in the biz and wishing them many, many more.

Leeteuk

This leader probably needs no introduction – you’ll probably have heard of him as long as you’re into anything kimchi. Leeteuk does it all: from being the group’s resident mother hen to being a variety star.

While his baby-faced looks haven’t changed at all since he first burst out on the scene a decade ago, we’re glad that he’s put his old mane of glory behind him for this new and more flattering look.

Heechul

Heechul

Oh Heechul, never change. The star is often labeled as 4D (four dimensional) for his crazy antics and (sometimes overly) honest admissions. The self-proclaimed ‘big space star’ once admitted in an interview that he wants to make music while still allowing the more adept at singing have their chance to shine – thus giving rise to project group M&D with label-mate TRAX’s Jungmo.

We’re just glad that Heechul got rid of his ahjumma (‘auntie’ in Korean) locks for this shorter ‘do. Then again, almost everything would look good on you if you had milky white skin and a face like his.

Yesung

If there’s one thing that has transformed this vocalist between then and now, it’s this: eyeliner. While his debut days were spent relatively makeup-less, he loves his black liner so much that he sports it almost all the time – even on his off days.

A keen businessman, he’s also set up his own businesses – WHYSTYLE (eye wear and accessories) and Mouse Rabbit café. Subgroup K.R.Y.’s kicked off their Asia Tour in August – one that might be their last for a while if the reports that Ryeowook and Kyuhyun will enlist next year are true.

Kangin

The first member to enlist in 2010, many believe that his earlier-than-expected military stint was due to the negative image he built up after being involved in an assault and DUI (driving under the influence) case.

Making his return to the group with Sexy, Free & Single, the more mature, stoic version of the once-goofy Kangin has quietly built his way back up and has gradually become more confident when attending public events.

Shindong

The resident mood-maker of the bunch, Shindong, together with Eunhyuk, directed the group’s concert tour Super Show 3 and went on to go behind the cameras for various music videos, including the unofficial video for Dynamic Duo’s ‘Guilty’ and bandmates Donghae & Eunhyuk’s ‘Oppa Oppa’.

Currently serving his army stint, he enlisted midway through the Super Show 6 tour but his presence was felt with his emotional rendition of Baek Ji Young’s ‘Don’t Forget’, off the drama IRIS’s OST. The 30-year-old performed the ballad live during the opening shows in Seoul and the video was played at venues he was unable to make it to. Don’t worry Shindong, we’ll definitely remember you and look forward to seeing you again.

Sungmin

Sungmin surprised fans when he announced his marriage to musical actress Kim Sa Eun last December, shortly before his enlistment in March. While the two have largely stayed out of the public eye – he has even deleted his personal Instagram account after receiving backlash – many of his dedicated fans have continued to show their support for their idol.

That aside, the 29-year-old has been jokingly referred to as a vampire for his never-changing looks. We’re not sure if it’s just genes but we’d really like to know how he remains looking as baby-faced as ever, especially with the crazy schedules Super Junior has been juggling over the past decade.

Eunhyuk

Eunhyuk

The term ‘ugliest member’ has been used on Eunhyuk repeatedly since debut, but that hasn’t brought him down in any way. If anything, he’s worked even harder to become one of the most charismatic members of the group, commanding entire stages with just his presence.

Apart from being the group’s resident dancing machine, his athletic abilities have also been demonstrated on multiple occasions – in particular during the Idol Star Athletics, variety programme Let’s Go Dream Team and more. Now that he’s away in the army, dedicated fans have started to count down the days till he returns to the group – while it’s going to be a long wait, it’ll all be worth it for them.

Donghae

Donghae

Often branded as the eternal five-year-old in the group, Donghae’s fresh looks and bright personality have consistently stayed with him from day one. While he’s had his ups and downs – his father passed away around a year after the group debuted – he’s pulled through with the help of his group members, who have recently expressed their worries about how he will cope in the army.

Not just a pretty face, Donghae has also quietly displayed his talents in having a hand in composing numerous songs for the group and beyond. For one, ‘First Love’, off subgroup Donghae & Eunhyuk’s first single Oppa Oppa, was both composed and written by him. Female duo As One’s ‘Only You’ was also written by Donghae, who featured on the track.

Siwon

Siwon

These days, Siwon has become one of the hottest Super Junior members around thanks to his role as the dorky feature editor in She Was Pretty. With his enlistment date (Nov 19) looming ever closer, viewers have expressed their sadness that he will be out of the limelight for almost two years so soon after his breakout drama role.

Apart from honing his acting chops with a slew of movie and drama roles over the years, he’s also cemented his status as a gem on variety programmes, shedding the idol image completely when he’s at work. Well, if we had a face (and physique!) like his, we’d be completely without inhibitions too. See you soon, soldier!

Ryeowook

During Super Junior’s debut, Ryeowook was the maknae (youngest) of the group until Kyuhyun was added around a year later. He’s grown from being one of the quieter members to being someone able to host his own radio show (Super Junior Kiss the Radio, also known as Sukira), starring in musicals and lending his voice for various drama OSTs.

In a previous interview, Ryeowook expressed his desire for Super Junior to not just be known as an entertaining group but also one that has serious vocal talent to reckon with. K.R.Y (Kyuhyun, Ryeowook and Yesung), known as the the best vocalists of the band, are currently on an Asia tour to charm the ears off their audiences and prove his point.

Kyuhyun

Kyuhyun

After a much-talked about rocky start in Super Junior, Kyuhyun is now the proud leader of the Kyu-line, which consists of TVXQ!’s Changmin, SHINee’s Minho, CNBLUE’s Jonghyun, EXO’s Suho and INFINITE’s Sunggyu.

While he’s not out with his squad, he’s the resident evil maknae of Super Junior – one that uses his sharp tongue to put his hyungs (older brother-like members) in place. That keen wit has also made him a variety star in his own right, with a fixed casting on variety programme Radio Star that has earned him much praise from the public.

SPECIAL MENTION: Hankyung (Hangeng) & Kibum

Always the object of much speculation and conspiracy theories, former Chinese member Hankyung left the group in 2009 in a highly publicised fashion. While he has since gone on to be successful in his solo career, he’s still often asked about his time with the group.

Kibum, on the other hand, was never officially withdrawn from Super Junior but was on an indefinite hiatus since 2009. Earlier this year, he announced the end of his contract with S.M. Entertainment but the members have pledged that they will always be welcome him back to the group if he decides to make his return one day.
