A principal is asking children to bring in cans to be used as weapons.

Priscella Holley, the head of W.F Burns Middle School in Alabama, south eastern United States, has asked parents to supply their children with tins of peas and sweetcorn to protect the school if there is an intruder, the Huffington Post newspaper reports.

In the letter sent out to parents, she writes: "We realise at first this may seem odd; however, it is a practice that would catch an intruder off guard.

"The canned food item could stun the intruder or even knock him out until the police arrive."
