Teenagers who thought they were stealing cocaine actually took a man's ashes.

Police have accused the trio - aged 17, 15 and 16 - of breaking into a home in St Peters, Missouri, US, in November 2014.

The thieves took an Xbox 360 and prescription medicine, as well as the ashes of the homeowner's father, which were being stored in a wooden box and were mistaken for drugs, Metro newspaper reports.

Upon realising their mistake, the group threw the ashes out of a car window and police tracked them down using the Xbox Online and IP address.
