10 things we love about David Beckham

Text: Ng Jia Yi

Ex-English footballer David Beckham may have retired from the field, but that hasn’t affected his position as one of the iconic football players in the world – and the envy of most men and women alike.

Between his adorable family, lucrative business and a face that hardly shows his forty years of age (happy birthday, David!), this star has a life and accent that’s probably a life goal for many of us. However, his role model status isn’t the only reason why he was – and is still – so beloved throughout his many years in the spotlight.

There are just too many things to love about David, but here are ten reasons why he’ll always have our hearts.

His “never say die” attitude

You would probably scoff at this now, but David hadn’t always been viewed as prime football material.

In fact, he was once told that he would never be able to play for England’s national team – because he was “too small and not strong enough”. Ouch.

Some people might have chosen to give up on the spot, but the then 16-year-old David chose to grit his teeth and strive on with an indomitable spirit. Three years later, he managed to prove his naysayers wrong by getting signed onto the prestigious football club, Manchester United, and even managed to become the captain of England’s national team for six years.

When they say that determination looks good on a man, they sure aren’t wrong.

His business skills

David Beckham doesn’t just stand for a renowned ex-football player - it’s also a brand name that’s easily worth millions of dollars.

Throughout his career, David has managed to land endorsement contracts with many esteemed brands such as Adidas and fashion brand H&M. In fact, the year in which David bagged the most amount of earnings - US$75 million (approximately S$103.9 million) - was 2014, the first year after his retirement from the football scene.

The Brit has been involved in many a business project, including designing a body wear line for H&M and releasing a whisky line with Haig Club. Besides that, he also works on personal endeavours such as creating his own Major League soccer franchise in Miami. That may have been delayed due to some trouble with finding a stadium site, but when it does go through, it could be one of his most profitable ventures.

His heart of gold

It’s the heart that counts, and David’s big heart also has a part to play in his appeal.

Throughout his career, he has been endorsing numerous charity organisations such as UNICEF, the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Red Cross. In 2013, after he signed a five-month contract with the Paris Saint-Germain club, he voluntarily offered to donate all his salary – a whopping GBP$3.4 million (approximately S$7 million) – to a local children’s charity.

His efforts were acknowledged in the form of a Global Gift Philanthropist award that very same year, to which the star commented: “It is a real honour to be given this award and this is a very proud moment for me.  I have always wanted to use my position in the public eye to make a positive difference and I feel very humbled to have been recognised in this way.”

And did the award put an end to his works? No – David recently embarked on yet another philanthropic venture with UNICEF by launching 7: The David Beckham Unicef Fund, which aims to help children at risk worldwide.

Consider us won over.

Every day is a good hair day

Bed hair, unflattering haircuts and outlandish dyes are not problems that David has to deal with.

The Brit is one of the few high-profile male celebrities who dare to try out different hairstyles and cuts every so often, providing inspiration for men struggling with their hair all over the world.

Many haircuts that had their one minute of fame on his head got their big break and were quickly adopted by the public. Other than the well-known Faux Hawk hairstyle, David was also the proponent for other popular cuts such as the side sweep, “curtains” style, messy Ivy League, and the buzz cut that got him into hot soup with Victoria.

We’re not going to lie – some of those hairstyles we wish never came into existence (man buns, anyone?), but David somehow manages to pull them off with aplomb, and that alone deserves some serious respect.

His self-control

Not many 40-year-olds on the street can boast of a ripped body sans beer belly, but then again, it’s never easy to maintain a model-worthy figure. Even for David, keeping his body in shape required nothing less than a grueling fitness regime.

His exercises included high-intensity runs, 60-yard turnarounds and sprints. On top of that, David also embarked on Pilates while he was loaned to Italian club AC Milan, which helped to minimise his body fat and further improve his fitness.

Simply keeping to a workout schedule is hard enough, but those are not the only things that the ex-football star had to do. Besides taking time off for exercising, he also had to stick to a healthy diet, which meant no (bad) fat food – no burgers, steak, or truffle fries – but a high concentration of vegetables.

We don’t think we could possibly complete those exhausting workouts and still stay away from some unhealthy and satisfying comfort food, but we’re not David Beckham with his crazy self-control.

His eye for women

His eye for women

Despite the occasional erroneous judgments in his hairstyle decisions, David apparently has a sharp eye for women.

His wife, Victoria Beckham, is a former Spice Girl turned fashion designer – and a strong woman who isn’t dependent on her husband at all. Since she started her fashion label in 2008, it has quickly risen to become one of the most talked about brands during New York Fashion Week, and her company saw a massive profit of GBP$30 million (approximately S$62 million) in 2013 alone.

Not only is she now a respected designer in fashion circles, Victoria also appears to be a loving wife who shares an enviable relationship with David. According to him, Victoria had burst into tears on the phone when she heard about his tendon injury rendering him incapable of participating in the World Cup in 2010.

Since the football star’s retirement from the sport in 2013, the pair have often been spotted enjoying various sports matches together, going on family outings with their four children, and looking fabulous on red carpets – excuse us while we update our marriage goals.

His perfect genes

For all the talent that they possess, it’s great to know that David and Victoria’s children are made up of nothing less than their very best bits.

If you were among those who mourned for the loss of a great player the day David retired, fret not, for it seems that the Beckhams will be continuing to make waves on the football field for a long time to come. David’s three sons, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz Beckham, are already taking after their father in terms of football skills.

While 12-year-old Romeo and 9-year-old Cruz have been training under football club Arsenal’s prestigious Hale End Academy, 16-year-old Brooklyn has already managed to score a short-term contract with the club. Recent reports have it that Brooklyn will be released from Arsenal by the end of this season due to lacklustre development, but there’s still hope for him yet.

On the other hand, Harper Beckham, the baby of the family and only girl, may not be kicking a ball around anytime soon, but is already a fashionista like her mother at three years of age. She’s often seen parading the streets in gorgeous designer styles, and apparently even picks out David’s clothes and accessories for him - genes never lie, we say.

His love for his family

What’s more hot than a handsome man? A loving father, of course.

David’s life may seem hectic and fast paced, with his many business endeavours and endorsement contracts, but that hasn’t stopped him from paying attention to his family and providing his children with the love and care that they need.

He’s always spotted out on outings with his family, and isn’t afraid of getting caught playing with his daughter like an obsessed dad. David also happens to be one of those awesome fathers who love their family and aren’t afraid to show it - even through exaggerated ways like bear hugs and loud proclamations of love.

Better yet, he’s also really supportive of Victoria’s fashion business. The proud husband turned up at this year’s New York Fashion Week with children in tow in order to support his wife, and spent the whole night looking blissful, cuddling Harper in his lap and taking selfies with his offspring. Needless to say, they were picture perfect.

His (natural) fashion sense

Remember that twinge of resentment and reluctant awe at the classmate who insisted that he didn’t study, but still managed to score far better than you?

That’s how we feel about David’s fashion sense. The man has always been a regular guest at the very top of best-dressed lists, rocking both casual and formal looks alike, but it’s all effortless on his part.

The star revealed that he goes for comfort rather than style, and in fact, only takes five minutes to get ready every morning before chauffeuring his kids to school. Despite this apparently laissez fare approach to dressing, he remains men’s fashion role model, and one of the most fashion-savvy athletes ever.

For daring to be himself

For daring to be himself

With the exception of a few eccentric K-pop idols, there really aren’t many men out there who dare to wear nail polish.

But David has - and that’s not even one of the most unique things he has done. One of his most defining moments as a men’s fashion icon occurred in 1998, when he stepped out in a sarong and still managed to get away with it.

The father of four is also fearless when it comes to admitting his likes and dislikes. He openly admitted his fear of frogs on BBC travel documentary Into the Unknown, expressed his appreciation for Jay Z by adding one of the rapper’s concert lyrics - “Dream Big, Be Unrealistic” - to his diverse tattoo collection, and even revealed that as he grows older, his fondness for flowers has increased.

Surely those things all require a significant amount of confidence and courage to pull off - and there’s nothing we love more than a David Beckham who’s not afraid to just be himself.
