Older classics shine at Boyzone’s Singapore show

‘Every Day I Love You’, ‘Words’ and ‘When You Say Nothing At All’ were among the hits that drove the audience wild at the Irish band’s concert

Boyzone may have added two new albums into their discography over the past couple of years, but as we witnessed from their BZ20 The Anniversary Tour show at Marina Bay Sands last night, 90s/early 2000s releases still hold a very special place in fans’ hearts.

This fact was apparent from the different receptions shown towards the first two songs, ‘Love is a Hurricane’ (from their 2010 record Brother) and ‘Picture of You’ (from 1996’s A Different Beat) – while audiences cheered and clapped to welcome the quartet when they opened the show with the former track, it was the latter hit that really got the two-hour party started as excited screams flooded the Grand Theatre.

The crowd’s reaction continued to reach fever pitch for the other older favourites that popped up throughout the evening, such as ‘Baby Can I Hold You’, ‘Words’, ‘You Needed Me’ and ‘Love Me for a Reason’. Everyone inevitably begun singing along to the familiar tunes, transforming the concert into one big, happy, nostalgic karaoke session.

That’s not to say the more recent numbers failed to draw any love, of course. When the band urged everyone in the room to stand up for ‘Reach Out I’ll Be There’ and ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’ (from their 2014 Motown covers album Dublin to Detroit), they didn’t need to ask twice as the congregation immediately got on their feet and started dancing along to the upbeat tracks.

Ronan Keating added to the trip down musical memory lane when he gifted concertgoers with two extra treats: his solo singles ‘When You Say Nothing At All’ and ‘Life is a Rollercoaster’, which he performed with members Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Mikey Graham.

Sadly, we could not get to see the late Stephen Gately, who passed away from a heart defect in 2009, in action with his mates. “This is the first time Boyzone is back in Asia since we lost Stephen,” said Ronan. “It was a difficult decision to get back together as a group but we know it’s what he would have wanted. His memory is still alive when the four of us are together.”

However, “Steo” – as the band affectionately calls him – was still able to be a part of the act when his voice was included in ‘Every Day I Love You’ and ‘Gave It All Away’. The band’s female backup vocalist filled in for his distinct timbre for their megahit ‘No Matter What’, because “no matter how hard we tried, none of us could reach Stephen’s high notes”.

Another highlight of the thoroughly entertaining gig was the close interactions between the members and lucky attendees in or near the front row seats. Every now and then, Boyzone would venture to the edge of the platform to high-five or shake hands with those who excitedly ran up for an up-close-and-personal encounter. Some even managed to score selfies, or had their picture taken with the lads in the background.

But a special honour was reserved for one devotee, whose phone was borrowed to take a picture of the band on stage with the audience in the background, their phone flashes turned on to create a gorgeous, starry backdrop.

Well, it’s not every day you have chart-topping music legends swiping through your mobile (and joking about reading through your “kinky” texts), is it?
