Instead of her usual serious, poised and pretty girl image portrayed in her previous drama roles, MediaCorp actress Rebecca Lim will take her career to a whole new level with her first ever comedy series.
In the upcoming Toggle original series For A Better Tomorrow which is based in the 70s and revolves around people working in government sectors and the policies implemented, Rebecca will challenge herself by acting stupid or disgusting in her role as a blur queen.
“I really enjoyed the filming process and my co-actors taught me the importance of being hardworking, down-to-earth and to not complain,” the starlet told xinmsn at an outdoor shoot on Monday where she further explained the locations for filming were usually stuffy and poorly ventilated.
Other artistes who were there included Brandon Wong, Belinda Lee, Zhang Yao Dong, Yao Wen Long, Zhu Hou Ren and Gurmit Singh, whom Rebecca shared is someone she always hoped to work with.
While she was honest about her “lack of humour and creativity in telling jokes”, Gurmit praised Rebecca for her performance and sacrifices made for the show.
“Not every actress can put down her baggage as an idol for a comedy like Rebecca did. She is always engrossed in her role and even asks ‘What else can I do to make the role funnier or more disgusting?’” Gurmit laughed as he revealed how she scares the cast by imitating the low voice of a man.
The Best Supporting Actress award winner in this year’s Star Awards even had to play Wonder Woman and had to wear the superhero’s costume, in addition to her outfits of the 70s, as she saves Gurmit’s character, Raju Sundaram, from an imaginary car accident.
Rebecca, who was coincidentally into her last day of filming, further shared how she threw her image aside for unglam scenes like having to talk with her mouth full. “I hope I won’t lose my endorsements after the series airs!” she chortled.
Zhang Yao Dong enjoys being a hippie
Following Malaysian actor Zhang Yao Dong’s departure from MediaCorp in 2013 after his last two dramas Love at Risk and Disclosed, he is back to play a hippie in this web series. His character in the show named himself “James Bon” so as to hide his original feminine name to appear cool.
Living in the 70s, an era when the hippie culture thrived, Yao Dong plays a hippie who goes against the country’s policy with his act of keeping his hair long. Due to the unusual getup, Yao Dong calls it his most memorable scene.
His co-actor Brandon, who plays a colleague envious of his good looks, also agreed that Yao Dong was able to immerse himself in the role and that it was a pleasure to watch.
Revealing that his wife is already six-months pregnant with their third son, Brandon was able to relate to the “Stop at Two” policy implemented back then and found it significant to inculcate good habits in children from young.
For A Better Tomorrow will air on Toggle next May. The 13-episode series will last for 30 minutes each.
