Kelvin Tan: Singer turned sportsman

The first Project Superstar champion released a total of three music albums since his debut and last performed a special tribute song penned by Dick Lee for Singapore, ‘Treasure Every Moment’, in 2013. While he is no longer active in the music industry, Kelvin recently made headlines in the sports section of the local papers for his newfound identity as a sportsman. After years of strumming the guitar and crooning mellow ballads, the 33-year-old blind busker is now on Singapore’s national goalball team and will be representing the nation at the Asean Para Games this December.

Best known for her cute image on the show, the first female champion of Project Superstar 2005 moved to Taiwan in 2007 in search of better career opportunities but ended up struggling to make ends meet. She finally had her second break in her career after participating in Super Star, a Taiwanese reality TV singing competition when she graduated from the programme with flying colours and was given a chance to release her first EP in three years, Miss Kelly, last year.

When Derrick was unexpectedly booted out in the final round of the singing competition in 2005, he decided to put a halt to his singing career and enlist into army shortly after. After completing his two years of military service, he launched his first album and uprooted to Taiwan to develop his entertainment career. In 2013, he gained fame for being the first local singer to hit the top spot of the iTunes charts in Singapore with his viral hit release ‘Forever’, a remix of PJ& Duncan’s retro electronic pop song ‘Eternal Love’. We hear the singer just completed filming for two new MVs which can only mean one thing: keep a lookout for his comeback which will showcase a different (and never before seen) side of Derrick.

Although Darryl was unsuccessful in his attempts to carve out a singing career for himself after participating in Project Superstar, he persisted in his show business dreams and joined Star Search five years later. As one of the top 10 finalists in the talent competition, he landed a full-time acting contract with MediaCorp (which ended in April 2013) and found fame with the English-speaking audience with a fixed role in two seasons of Ch5 drama series, Point of Entry. These days, he’s better known as Ben Tong, the young barista who runs a café with his mother in Ch5’s Tanglin.

Silver Ang: The one who hosts and acts too

Silver started her showbiz career in singing, as a participant on Project Superstar Season 1. While the latter career option didn’t work out as expected, she continued working on her dreams and branched into other areas of show business, including acting, hosting and even joined an overseas singing competition called Super Star last year. The former air stewardess, who made her acting debut in Suria drama UMMI (Untuk Mu Mama Idaman, which means To Mummy With Love), was last seen in Channel 5 drama Koji Cooks and makes regular cameos and guest appearances on variety shows and dramas such as the currently showing Sealed With A Kiss and upcoming ‘Dream Makers 2’.

Sugie Phua ): The one who went into theatre

It’s a normal career progression for singers and actors to diversify into different aspects of showbiz such as hosting, acting, and even theatre productions, like Sugie did. When not acting in local dramas (he was last seen in 118 and Three Wishes), Sugie can be found putting his vocal abilities to good use in local plays and musical shows such as Glass Anatomy, Monkey Goes West and December Rains, which is now showing at the Esplanade.
