What a night - getting Adam Lambert and some of the best local talents to countdown to 2016 together at The Float at Marina Bay must mean this year is off to a good start already.

For the 75-minute broadcast the performers delivered hit after hit, high after high: Our own inaugural Singapore Idol Taufik Batisah opened the show with a rousing rendition of ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ by The Weeknd (not a typo); the five-piece Hunks of Mediacorp - comprising Alfred Sim, Desmond Tan, Ian Fang, Jeffrey Xu and Shane Pow - delivered a medley of Taylor Swift and One Direction songs; and American Idol alumnus Adam Lambert sang tracks off his new album live for his local Glamberts.

The singer received the warmest welcome of the night. Dressed in a long black t-shirt, fingerless leather gloves and sandals, he delivered five songs before the countdown and fireworks began, including ‘Evil in the Night,’ ‘Ghost Town’ and ‘Another Lonely Night,’ all from his latest album, The Original High, dropped in June.

The snazzy performer added lines from Queen’s ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ into his track ‘Trespassing,’ and when he sang his 2009 hit ‘Whataya Want from Me’ it almost sounded like a secret message to those who petitioned against his inclusion in the programme.

Homegrown singer Inch Chua paired up with rapper THELIONCITYBOY for ‘All Night’ and ‘Mousedeer,’ while Gareth Fernandez sang ‘Uptown Funk’ and ‘Physical’ backed by The Momma Shop quartet. DJ Tinc was on deck spinning for an ensemble performance by the six groups still in the running to win the top spot on The Dance Floor.

The live telecast began at 11 p.m., but the party got started way earlier at 8 p.m., with South American folk band Sisay as the first act to grace the stage. The band performed a staggering nine songs, divided into three sets. The Dance Floor top six each got a chance to shine, as did Isaac Ong and Odelle Sabrin, recent contestants on the second season of reality singing competition The Final 1.

We would have liked to check out Duke Ian Fang performing his debut Mandarin rap single, ‘First Attempt,’ which was released on Christmas, but sadly that was not one of the items broadcast.

After an 8-minute fireworks spectacle launched at the stroke of midnight, eight of the cast of Channel 5’s drama series Tanglin - Nat Ho, Darryl Yong, Fauzie Laily, James Seah, Gayle Nerva, Kayly Loh, Jae Liew and Syirah Jusni - kicked off the first performance of the year, a medley of Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood’ and ‘Blank Space,’ Justin Bieber’s ‘Sorry’ and Rachel Platten’s ‘Fight Song.’ With that, the live telecast ended, after which Adam Lambert returned to the stage with another five songs and got the crowd psyched for 2016.
