Local artistes ‘fessed up on how far they would go to portray their roles well

Some may think the entertainment industry is all glitz and glamour – but not quite. Behind the veiled curtains of showbiz lie a mind-boggling amount of sacrifices to be made, out of which one is directly related to actors’ jobs.

Transforming from themselves to someone else entirely for a role is part of their daily lives, and while some can be achieved after hours in the makeup studio, others require a lot more effort to realistically achieve their goals.

Two such examples from our little red dot include Rui En dolling down and putting on 4kg for her role in If Only I Could and Aileen Ang allowing her chipped tooth to remain as it is for months for her role in movie Long Long Time Ago.

We asked our local artistes, ranging from the cast of A Selfie’s Tale to Aloysius Pang and Felicia Chin the same thing: how far will they go to portray a character. Find out who would au natural for the cameras, who thinks he’s the best at cross-dressing and more.

Toggle: Would you strip for the cameras?

Aloysius: I would definitely do it if the script makes sense, but if someone just came up to me and said, “I need you to strip for this shot” and it doesn’t make any sense, then I wouldn’t do it.

Currently, I’m willing to do practically anything for art as long as it makes sense. Even if I had to go full frontal, it doesn’t mean that I need to have six packs (…) other actors do what they have to in order to portray the best outcome and that is something I’m trying to pursue as well.

Toggle: Would you participate in intimate scenes your loved ones strongly disapprove of?

Joshua: No, I don’t think I would. The opinions of my loved ones mean a lot to me and there will be a reason behind their disapproval. I’d respect their reasons and listen to them because I’m a guai kia (good kid). (chuckles)

I have my limits – I won’t go full frontal because I don’t think there’s a need for that. However, that’s what I think now and this might change five or 10 years down the road. I feel that in life, you have to adhere to your morals and not break your rules for every opportunity and end up losing yourself, your integrity and who you are. When one door closes another opens so you never know what will happen.

Toggle: Will you be willing to knock out your front teeth for a role?

Felicia: I’m actually wondering if chipping part of the tooth or knocking the entire thing out is better. (laughs) I think I would if the role requires it but it’s definitely a sacrifice!

I’d definitely feel self-conscious about it but that’s part of our job and there’s different things that we need to do. Aileen (Ang) chipped her tooth and waited for so long before she fixed it – she’s really courageous and sacrificial and I truly salute her.

Toggle: Would you give up looking after your skin in order to achieve a realistic haggard look?

Sonia: I think I would say no. Or yes? I don’t know. How much is this role paying me? (laughs) If I could star alongside Johnny Depp, sure I definitely would but other than that – no.

I think it’s really hard to let yourself go and just not take care of your skin. Like, I feel disgusting if I don’t wash my face at least twice a day. Once again, if it’s Johnny Depp we’re talking about, I’d do anything so this won’t be an issue if he’s involved.

Toggle: Would you strip for the cameras?

Jeffrey: Do you mean stripping completely? It depends on the role and circumstances and I have to understand the situation completely for me to make a decision. Of course, taking it all off is not an issue. If it’s an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I don’t think there’s anything I wouldn’t do. I’ll have some inner struggles so I’d need to prepare myself mentally for it.

Toggle: What would you do if your manager suddenly said that you have a role offer but that it requires you to take your clothes off?

Jeffrey: I’d ask my manager this: “Since you’re my manager, do you think it’s worth it?” After which, I’d find out more about the offer. If people such as (directors) Johnnie To, Feng Xiaogang and Zhang Yimou are involved, or if it’s for a more artistic project, I’d think that there would probably be a better reason for taking my clothes off.

Toggle: Would you cross-dress convincingly for a role?

Jaspers: This question is so me! I will willingly, confirm, 100% plus chop cross-dress whether or not it’s for a role! (laughs)

Actually, I can provide numerous pictures of me as a girl. I did quite a number of such roles so honestly speaking, I think I’m very good at it and nobody can do it better. As an artiste, I like to conquer limits so after my auntie role, I’ll want to try a schoolgirl outfit next!

Toggle: Do you think you make a pretty girl?

Jaspers: I definitely make a pretty girl.

Toggle: Will you be willing to knock out your front teeth for a role?

Audrey: How much are they paying me for this? (laughs) I actually have an overbite when I smile so I sometimes look like a dinosaur in photos. My bottom teeth are really crooked but thanks to my overbite you can only see my top teeth.

I think if the project pays well and the role is awesome, I definitely would. It can be fixed anyway, so it’s fine!

Toggle: Would you lose weight to a point of being unhealthy if your role called for it?

Maxi: Actually, I think I would. Actors like Christian Bale (who lost 28kg for The Machinist) only ate a can of tuna every day to lose weight to a point of being unhealthy. I lost a lot of weight before filming (Ah Boys to Men 3) Frogmen too! That was 11kg and in previous other short films I lost or gained weight in order to suit my role more so yeah, this is something I will and can do.

Toggle: How about gaining weight to a point of being unhealthy?

Jaspers: Yes, he’ll happily gain weight!

Maxi: Ah yes, I definitely will.

Jaspers: But you’ll have to do it to a point of being unhealthily fat or unhealthily thin! I don’t think you can do the second one because you can never go thin.

Maxi: Actually, if someone needs me unhealthily fat for a role, I think I can do it right away – there’s no need for me to gain weight and I can just take the role. (chuckles)

Toggle: Would you be willing to bulk up for a role?

Darryl: Yes! Wait, do you mean like the Incredible Hulk? Actually, why not. I think even for this role itself, I believe I look different from what I used to look like. I kind of became a mini Hulk! When I’m filming Tanglin, they always say, “Eh Darryl, you’re like… Kinda big ah!”

The funny thing is, the rest of the cast is really petite – even the guys like Nat Ho and Fauzie Laily are slim so in contrast, I look like a hulk and I shouldn’t be bulking up any more. As an actor you have to change your physique to test yourself and break through your limits in life, so why not? I see myself as playdough, you can knead me, you can change me, and what I want in life is experience.

If you need me to go fat, I will go fat; if you need me to go slim, I will go slim. If you asked me to change sex, that might be a little… (laughs) In general, anything else you need me to do – even if I have to go botak (bald) or go naked, I will! But for going nude, my threshold is the upper body because if you go any lower, the show will be cancelled because there’s nothing to see. (chuckles)

Toggle: Would you be willing to wear a bikini and run down Orchard Road?

Eunice: Oh gosh, it depends what role it is, how big the show is, what time and particularly which part of Orchard Road.

Toggle: The busiest part of Orchard Road, during lunch time!

Eunice: Eh… Why not! I mean I’m a beach person so I’m very comfortable being in a bikini. Though I don’t have the best assets but I’m confident of my body.

Toggle: If you could pick anyone from the cast of A Selfie’s Tale to run along with you, who would you pick?

Eunice: I’ll pick Darryl and Joshua to run with me so that everybody will look at them and not me! (laughs)

Joshua: Nope, I’m not doing it but I’ll gladly be there to watch!

Darryl: Hmm I don’t know. It’s not that I don’t dare to but why would I do that? If it’s for charity I would do it because it’s for a worthy cause but if it’s just a dare I’d feel intimidated because Eunice has a hot body so I’ll just let her have the limelight! I’d probably do it for charity but as of now, I’m still a little shy.

Toggle: Would you put on weight for a role? If so, what’s your limit?

Aden: Yes I would – provided that it’s successful! I’ve been trying to put on weight for the longest time but I just can’t! So there’s no limit as long as I can put on weight. I’d want to put on a lot of weight if I can – so yes, I definitely would!
