The air was filled with mystery and excitement in MediaCorp’s make-up unit, as the make-up artist (the same one who did Hong Huifang’s epic transformation in Good Luck) yielded his brushes on Rui En during her special imaging for Ch8 blockbuster drama The Dream Makers 2 yesterday.

Although the “end product” will only be revealed on TV, Rui En let on that her character Fang Tong Lin will suffer disfigurement in the show. “It’s the first time that I’m playing a role that gets disfigured. To women, this is our worst nightmare,” she said. “Fang Tong Lin is such a positive person. How will she overcome this? I think it is something that viewers would want to see.”

Rui En intends to interpret Tong Lin’s emotions by putting herself into the shoes of her character. “I need to think about how I would react if such a thing were to happen to me. Will I develop an inferiority complex? Will I face it positively? Though the latter will be tough [to face] in the beginning,” the actress shared.

Previously, the 34-year-old put on old age make-up for docudrama The Worlds of Georgette Chen. A day of filming was enough to make her ultra-sensitive skin all red and itchy after she removed the make-up. Hence, Rui En is admittedly worried that her skin will act up again this time around, especially when she has to shoot several episodes in the disfigured look.

“The rubbing of the skin [during make-up removal] and the products that I need to use are quite harsh, so I’d really have to enhance my skincare,” she added.

Disfigured but not defeated: Rui En’s new challenge in The Dream Makers 2

Acting, to Rui En, is like cycling – you never forget a character that you have played and you can always reinterpret it again. Resuming her role as Tong Lin after two years, the actress’ task is in presenting a grown-up version of the jovial character.

“How do I retain the comical side of her while injecting maturity into the role? That’s the challenge,” she pointed out. “Everyone’s mindset changes at different stages in life. When I first met Tong Lin [in The Dream Makers], I love her because she is so adorable and quirky. It was good to play her.”

“Tong Lin is my happy pill. There are times when my mind gets weighed down by heavy thoughts, but when I go for filming, I remind myself that I am playing Tong Lin and so I’d forget about the unhappy stuff. She is a role that makes me look forward to work every day.”

In The Dream Makers 2, Tong Lin will go through life-changing events such as marriage and disfigurement, and the last thing Rui En wants to do is to repeat the same method of acting in the sequel.

As for her co-stars, the acclaimed thespian is more than happy to reunite with her onscreen brother Dennis Chew (“we make fun of each other when we meet”). At the same time, she is anticipating new sparks with Qi Yuwu, who has undergone significant changes in his real life in the past two years.

Yuwu, who has returned to Singapore after wrapping filming for Chinese drama The Spy War, will be in town from now till October for The Dream Makers 2. With Jason Lam’s promotion to executive producer in the sequel, Yuwu revealed that he would need a little time to make adjustments to the way he depicts the role, from his outfits to his mannerism.

While he was away, the actor kept in touch with his pregnant wife Joanne Peh by daily video calls. When asked if he has done anything to make up for his absence, Yuwu said that Joanne is very understanding and that he believes time lost cannot be recovered, but he hopes to take better care of her now.

According to the dad-to-be, the biggest change in Joanne during her pregnancy is that she has grown from “a girl to a woman”. “She is more sensitive to details nowadays. She would share her thoughts and observations with me. I feel like she has become a very complete and mature woman. I can’t pinpoint it, but some of the things she said really moved me,” Yuwu shared.

Without pressure from work, Joanne has been in good spirits and has more time to experience the journey of pregnancy. Luckily for the actress, the baby has been “quite cooperative” and it has been a relatively smooth ride so far. In fact, the 32-year-old has recently found a new hobby in baking as we have seen from her Instagram updates.

“She just started [baking] and I think she’s very talented. In the past, she has never imagined that she’d learn making cakes and bread. It just happened naturally during this period. Life has given us many surprises,” Yuwu said with a smile.

In April, the well-loved actor took time off his filming in China to attend Star Awards Show 2. When he returned to Hengdian, Yuwu brought along with him a box of handmade cookies which he could not bear to eat. “I put it in the fridge and when I look at it every day, I think of her. But [the cookies] are really delicious!” he chimed.

Two months to go before Joanne is due to give birth and the baby’s gender remains a secret. “Everyone starts guessing when they meet me, so I thought I’ll just keep you guys guessing. It’s like a game and you will have the answer when the time comes,” Yuwu laughed.

As Joanne has opted for natural birth, the couple is letting their child decide “when he/she wants to come out”. “If the baby is really born on National Day (Aug 9), that’s nice. If not, it’s okay too. I’m really fine with any date,” reiterated the actor.

When asked if he is ready to take on the role of a father, Yuwu straightforwardly said that there are certain things which you can never completely prepare for, especially for first-time parents. “There will be incidents that happen beyond our expectations and things that make us panic. But I believe we will overcome them in the end,” he thought aloud.

In addition, Yuwu let on that he has learned quite a bit from Joanne, who has been an avid reader of parenting books. “I don’t know what comprises of a good father, but I will start with myself. I think it’s important to be a good role model and not try to reason with the child all the time,” the dad-to-be said. “(Will you play the good or the bad cop?) I’m not sure! I guess I will only know when the baby is born.”

Joanne previously mentioned her intention to do a nude photo shoot with her baby bump. Although the plan has not been confirmed yet, Yuwu has no objections and is even willing to join the shoot. If done tastefully, the actor reckoned it to be a good memento for the family.

Now that the couple is about to welcome a new member to their home, Yuwu, who is signed to Enlight Media Group in China, confessed that he might cut down on overseas filming in future. “We will be going to Australia to film The Dream Makers 2. I used to be very excited when I get to travel for work, but now I’d ask: Can we film in Singapore?” he chortled. “It’s really different when you have a family.”

Edwin Goh returns to TV after two years

Missing from our TV screens for a long time, Edwin Goh will participate in The Dream Makers 2 as Eddy, son of Xie Guan En (Huang Biren) and godson of Lin Tao (Li Nan Xing).

The 20-year-old graduated from his three-year diploma course in Performing Arts at La Salle last month and is currently awaiting for notification of enlistment into the army. Two years since his last full-fledged role in Ch8 drama Gonna Make It! (his last appearance on TV was in 2014’s The Caregivers), Edwin feels fortunate and excited to be acting alongside “TV giants”, and can hardly wait for filming to commence.

However, the young actor is also worried that he has gotten “a little rusty” after being away from the cameras for so long. “It is pressurising and nerve-wrecking. I just hope that I will do my part well."

Sharing about his new role, Edwin described Eddy as a rebellious boy who loves to fight. What did not seem like a talent at first was eventually put to good use as he became a stuntman. “I don’t look like I do wushu at all. So I think I need to get into shape. (So will you be hitting the gym often from now?) Yes, I received little tips from people who do,” he replied with a grin.

Even though the good-natured chap hasn’t gotten any notice of body-baring scenes in the drama, he wishes to bulk up to look the part. And if he manages to build his muscles in time, he has no qualms about showing off his body.

During his time in school, Edwin missed out on several opportunities which includes induction into MediaCorp’s 8 Dukes. With his impending enlistment, he will disappear from the radar for two more years. Yet, the aspiring actor is not about to give up his passion for the craft.

“Opportunities come and go. I hope to grab and cherish them when I get out of army,” he asserted. “(So you plan to pursue a full-time career in showbiz after that?) Yes! I’ve been waiting for such long time.”

Also, Edwin expressed his gratitude to the fans who have remained supportive despite his absence. “I hope they will stick around for another two years!” he chuckled.
