Fool Again: Pranksters in local showbiz

On April 1 every year, people from across the globe play harmless pranks on each other and the victims have come to be termed “April fools”, giving the occasion its name.

From young and reckless horseplay during their school days to adult mischief and shenanigans, several local celebrities shared with us their pranking experiences this April Fools’ Day.

Nat Ho

Local singer-actor Nat Ho let the prankster out of the bag.

Toggle: What’s the most mischievous prank you have ever played on someone?
Nat:
Usually I’m the one getting pranked. (laughs)

In secondary school, one of our classmates placed the whiteboard duster on top of the whiteboard. Our Geography teacher was very short, so she couldn’t reach it and had to jump [to get it]. It was quite mean. I heard she cried after that. I was in a boys’ school and that’s what boys at that age do. But [the prank] wasn’t my idea. I was the class rep!

What is the worst prank that’s been played on you?
My friends recently threw me a surprise farewell party in Taiwan. I was actually a bit worried because I was coming back to Singapore for a long time, so I passed my keys to one of my friends to help collect letters and occasionally check that the house is in order.

One day when I went home, I opened the door as usual and then there was this streamer thing that looked like hair hanging down from the ceiling. I was like ‘what’s that’ and was very careful. I thought: “Did the ceiling break? Or is something from the ceiling falling out?”

Then I opened the door fully and they were like “SURPRISE”! It was nice, but you know, I was really on high alert at first.

Among your celebrity friends, who do you think will never fall for pranks?
Sheila (Sim). I don’t think she’s easily pranked because she’s quite careful.

I can tell you who the prankster in our group is. It’s actually Miss (Dawn) Yeoh. Don’t see her sweet sweet like that right, she likes to play pranks. Once during April Fools’, she hid in one corner at home (Taipei) and jumped out to scare me. It’s quite common lah, but I wouldn’t expect that to come from her. That’s why it is scary and it surprises me.

Then, who’s the easiest to trick?
Also her (Dawn) I think. She is very gullible. We were always very worried about her when we were in Taiwan because she trusts people easily. She is like our little sister. We dote on her and at the same time, worry about her.

Ian Fang

With his “bad boy” image among Caldecott Hill’s 8 Dukes, Ian Fang is unsurprisingly the prankster among his peers.

Toggle: What’s the most mischievous prank you have ever played on someone?
Ian:
There was once I called my celebrity friends and told them that I was from the LTA (Land Transport Authority). I asked if they have seen a certain car and said that they were suspected of car theft. They were worried at first, but when they realised it was a prank, some of them scolded me using bad words. (laughs)

Zhang Zhenhuan, Desmond Tan, Rebecca Lim and Aloysius Pang have all been tricked by me before.

Wouldn’t your voice give you away?
You know, I hurt my vocal cord previously. And you really can’t tell [that it is me] over the phone. I play the same prank every year and it always works! To be honest, I think I am really good at tricking people.

Among your celebrity friends, who do you think will never fall for pranks?
Me! Apart from me, it would be Jeffrey (Xu). He’s quite smart, so he wouldn’t get pranked so easily.

Then, who’s the easiest to trick?
The girls, like Jayley (Woo) and Rebecca (Lim), are too easy [to trick]. There’s no kick or difficulty. I often play little tricks on Jayley.

Jayley Woo

When we thought Jayley Woo is one easy victim of pranks, the up-and-coming actress pointed out a celebrity friend who is even more gullible than her.

Toggle: What’s the most mischievous prank you have ever played on someone?
Jayley:
I told a guy that I was pregnant. Of course he didn’t believe it because we didn’t do anything.

What is the worst prank that’s been played on you?
When I was in primary school, a classmate put glue on my seat and I didn’t realise it until class was over. But I didn’t cry about it as I didn’t think it was something worth crying for. I don’t know who did it and I was timid back then, so I didn’t seek revenge.

Among your celebrity friends, who’s the easiest to trick?
Bonnie (Loo). She is very innocent and believes people easily. She also trusts me a lot.

(In a separate interview, Bonnie admitted that she is the one who gets fooled all the time as others see through her lies with little effort.)

Who do you think will never fall for pranks?
Aloysius (Pang). He is too cool [in terms of temperament]. Unless you are very, very close to him and know his weaknesses, it’s really tough to agitate him. He’s like a block of wood. I think he’s the successor of “Mu Tou Ge Ge” (Qi Yuwu).

Chen Hanwei

Chen Hanwei’s prank-gone-wrong in primary school made him shy away from hoaxes since then.

Toggle: What’s the most mischievous prank you have ever played on someone?
Hanwei:
I don’t like to play pranks. In primary school, we went overboard with our prank to the extent that the victim’s parents went to school to reprimand us.

There was a pair of siblings in school. We tricked the younger brother into thinking that his elder brother had gone missing, when the latter was actually hiding in the toilet. The younger boy believed us, cried and called his mum, who called the police. The whole school got involved [because of our prank]. From then on, I stopped playing pranks.

Among your celebrity friends, who’s the easiest to trick?
(Hong) Hui Fang jie. She is just a blur blur auntie who becomes very nervous whenever you tell her something. She’s a kancheong spider auntie!

Elvin Ng

MediaCorp heartthrob Elvin Ng was a havoc maker during his junior college days.

Toggle: What’s the most mischievous prank you have ever played on someone?
Elvin:
When I was in NJC (National Junior College), a group of us threw a friend into the pond on his birthday. We thought it was fun but we got called out during assembly and were punished.

We were young and ignorant… We had those heavy metal lockers in NJC. After detention class (for skipping assembly) one day, my friend and I moved the rows of lockers around. In the end, the rest couldn’t find their lockers because they were not numbered. And we didn’t get found out!

Among your celebrity friends, who’s the easiest to trick?
Dawn (Yeoh) lor. She’s quite silly. She believes everything you say. She can’t tell if you are lying or for real.

Romeo (Tan) too. When I first worked with him on C.L.I.F., he was a newbie. I jokingly told him to wait for me to finish one more scene, and he really waited until I was done. He is a simple guy. He is smart, but sometimes he takes things very literally.

Kate Pang

We didn’t expect anything less entertaining from the playful mommy.

Toggle: What’s the most mischievous prank you have ever played on someone?
Kate:
In the past, glue mostly comes in liquid form. In primary school, there was the stick type that looks like lip balm. My classmate passed me one in strawberry flavour to trick another classmate, who took it and got her lips lightly stuck. She was super angry and she was someone who never got mad.

I am able to trick people without batting an eyelid. I am so good at it that everyone thinks I’m bulls***ting, even when I am telling the truth!

What is the worst prank that’s been played on you?
Andie fools me quite often. For example, if we plan to go out at 1pm, I would ask him the time and he would say “12.50pm”. Then I’d be very frantic. Both of us are good at tricking people.

Among your celebrity friends, who’s the easiest to trick?
Tracy Lee. She is really very dumb. She takes everything for real. Andie and I often talk nonsense, and she would believe all of that. Her brain isn’t very good, but she is very kind.

Will she be okay to hear that?
This is something positive! Only kind-hearted people get tricked easily.
