A good five years ago, 20 fresh faces were scouted from different parts of Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and China) with the hopes of grooming the next Zoe Tay, Chew Chor Meng or Christopher Lee through Channel 8’s Star Search programme in 2010. After weeks of competition, China-born Jeffrey Xu was crowned the winner and fellow finalists such as Romeo Tan, Adeline Lim, Sora Ma and Darryl Yong landed acting contracts with the TV station.

However, out of the six who were offered contracts, only five are still actively acting today. On the fifth anniversary of Star Search 2010, Toggle looks back on how far these contestants have come in their showbiz journeys. Read on for more!

Jeffrey Xu

Then: Champion
Now: As compared to his peers, he has yet to nab a male lead role and touts a weaker acting resume, but Jeffrey makes up for it with his array of hosting projects done over the years. His appearance-count on Channel 8 TV dramas have been steadily increasing since he won the Asian Television Awards for the supporting role of a male nurse in Marry Me in 2013, which effectively makes him the first out of his peers to win such a prestigious regional award, too.

Adeline Lim

Then: Second runner-up
Now: Pipped to be the Hill’s next sweet young thing for her genial good looks, Adeline decided to leave her starry dreams behind after her two-year contract came to an end in 2013 to pursue a full-time career in a different industry instead. During her short-lived acting stint as a budding actress, she starred in two blockbuster drama projects, Devotion in 2011 and Joys of Life in 2013. She is now a consultant at a legal recruiting firm.

Romeo Tan

Then: Third runner-up
Now: The first amongst his fellow contestants to hit the big league, Romeo was purported to be the next-big-thing after landing his first lead drama role, starring opposite Best Actress Award winner Rui En in 2013 for Sudden. Since then, he has gone on to headline a handful of male lead roles thereafter, including Yes! We Can, The Journey: Tumultuous Times and Our Homeland and currently-airing The Dream Makers 2.

The Dream Makers airs weeknights, 9 pm on Channel 8; watch it on Toggle-It-First.

Sora Ma

Then: Fourth runner-up
Now: She made headlines recently for taking on her first ever second-female-lead role in Ch8’s Hand in Hand this year, after doing a slew of supporting roles on TV during her early years in showbiz. While Sora has a lack lustrous acting resume, the marketing and management major was the first to strike it out on her own and open a joint business venture, The Mama Shop, with fellow actress Felicia Chin. The store may have ended operations due to lease issues, but we’re pretty sure this won’t be the last of her business ventures.

Darryl Yong

Then: Top 10 finalist
Now: Tanglin’s charming barista Ben Tong made many detours before landing his first English-speaking lead role – he had an unsuccessful debut in showbiz through Project SuperStar in 2005 and gave his showbiz dreams a second shot at Star Search in 2010. Before experiencing a third brush with fame in the currently-airing Channel 5 series, he did numerous small-time roles for dramas like Point of Entry 3, Devotion and Against The Tide. You know what they say about: Good things come to those who wait – and work hard.

Tanglin airs weeknights, 8.30 pm on Channel 5. Watch past episodes of Tanglin on Toggle.

James Seah

Then: Top 10 finalist
Now: The one with a big-budget movie project role (he played Qi Yuwu’s younger brother in 1965) under his belt, James, who was then the youngest contestant of the lot, decided to put his acting career on hold and enlist in the army before returning as a full-time artiste. Still working on building up his credentials as an actor, he can now be seen acting as Darryl’s younger brother in Tanglin, speaking a language he is far more fluent in.

Tanglin airs weeknights, 8.30 pm on Channel 5. Watch past episodes of Tanglin on Toggle.

Then: Top 20 contestant
Now: He’s not a full-time artiste with the station but is still regularly seen on TV thanks to the ad-hoc roles and projects he does from time to time. He was last seen acting opposite the Hong siblings (played by Jesseca Liu, Bryan Wong, Aloysius Pang and Seraph Sun) for Ch8 drama Hand in Hand.
