On Monday (May 18), MediaCorp held a comic book launch of the second edition from The Journey series.

This edition draws its story from the second season of the TV drama The Journey: Tumultuous Times, which is about the story of five youths unravelled over a period of 25 years from 1940 to 1965, spanning World War II and Singapore’s road to Independence. Major events that happen in the drama include the Hock Lee bus riots as well as the Japanese occupation of Singapore.

As The Journey leads up to Singapore’s 50th National Day (SG50), the third and final part in the trilogy drama series, The Journey: Our Homeland, will air in July, just in time for Singapore’s birthday.

It will see four new elements weaved into the comic book to further enhance learning for the students:

Firstly, the start of the comic book will chart the historical milestones of Singapore from 1942 to 1964 to give students an overview of the important events from the Second World War up till the nation’s declaration of independence.

Also, each of the six sections will cover the details of a historical event, plus a thought-provoking question at the end of it to challenge the student’s thinking and analytical skills.

Lastly, the core values will now include English versions to aid students in grasping the Chinese meanings more quickly.

From conceptualisation to finalisation, the process of making this comic book took a total of three months.

The first in a series of promotional roadshows in schools was held at Nanyang Primary School, where students could get up close and personal with some of the drama’s actors and actresses.

MediaCorp artistes Felicia Chin, Chen Han Wei, Shaun Chen, Romeo Tan and Andie Chen (from left to right) graced the event to play old-school games with the students such as chapteh and five stones. A Q&A and autograph session was held after the games and the event was hosted by local artiste Ben Yeo.

The five artistes took to Instagram to thank the fans at Nanyang Primary School for “the warm reception” on Monday.

Han Wei said that the Principal, teachers and students were all “very warm and friendly” and mentioned about the “educational and meaningful” comic book in his Instagram caption. Meanwhile, Romeo was tickled by the fact that all five of them had the Mandarin surname chen.

The cast continued with their school tour this morning with Carrie Wong joining them for a visit at Horizon Primary School.

Coming up on May 23, there will be a launch at the Bras Basah branch of POPULAR bookstore with Andie, Felicia and Romeo for a meet-the-fans and autograph session.

Retailing at S$9.90, the comic book is now available at all POPULAR bookstores.
