“You know what they say about The Noose: we are good from far…and far from good!”

That was Pornsak Sukhumvit’s (played to usual perfection by Chua Enlai) punchline after joking about the audiences in the faraway “cheap seats” having the best view of The Noose & Kakis live show last night.

We think he was just being modest: if that were the case, then we wouldn’t have seen 1,500 folks show up to The Theatre @ Mediacorp, and we certainly wouldn’t have heard all kinds of chuckles, giggles and guffaws brought on thanks to Enlai, Judee Tan, Suhaimi Yusof, Alaric Tay and their band of guest comedians (Kumar, Harith Iskander, Fakkah Fuzz, Kavin Jay, Rizal van Geyzal and Rishi Budhrani).

In the same vein as the recorded television programme on Channel 5, the two-hour live show poked fun of everything under the sun, from the annual haze (hence the title of the show 11 Months of Fresh Air) to the City Harvest Church saga (featuring a parody of Sun Ho’s ‘China Wine’ by a gyrating Judee) to our neighbouring country Malaysia (and its “best comedian”, Prime Minister Najib).

Even a Noose star was not spared. “If an artiste who cannot speak Chinese can be nominated for the Star Awards…” (They were, of course, referring to Enlai, who is nominated for this year’s Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes for the first time.)

As promised during our interview with the main Noose quartet, the cast interacted with the audience at times, with a Swiss national in the front row being their most frequent target last night (when asked if he prefers Singapore or Malaysia, he said he likes both and was brushed off with a “Switzerland is always neutral”).

Then, later on in the middle of a sketch about Uber, Enlai as Pornsak made his way down to the audience and asked a few people in the front row if they use the taxi-booking app. When they said no because they drive, he turned up his nose and declared, “This is the rich area, where people will pay $200 for this show.” (Yup, even spectators can be the brunt of jests as well!)

While the Noose regulars were the headliners of the evening, the guest comedians were also well-received thanks to their tickling delivery of quips about Singapore, Malaysia, Indians, Chinese, Malays and more. However, nobody drew louder hoots and applause than Kumar, who made his show-stopping entrance in his signature look – long hair, heavy makeup and a dress – before delving into his comedic complaints about living in an HDB flat.

If you missed the first show, fret not! The Noose & Kakis will be having three more shows at 8pm tonight (April 1) and at 2pm and 8pm tomorrow (April 2).

The Noose & Kakis…11 Months of Fresh Air is presented by MediaCorp VizPro International and Channel 5.
