Li Nanxing sheds weight for first sitcom role

The veteran actor will be playing the role of a sunshine boy in Channel 8 drama A Blessed Life

In upcoming Channel 8 drama A Blessed Life, fans of veteran actors Li Nanxing and Chen Li Ping will get to see them reunite on-screen and play siblings, following their last collaboration seven years ago in The Golden Path.

Although Li Ping, who will be his older sister in the show, is in fact a year younger than Nanxing, she laughed and dismissed doubts on whether it would be awkward for him to call her “older sister”.

“I even played his mother before (in The Golden Path), why should we be awkward now?” Li Ping asked xinmsn at the imaging session for A Blessed Life last Thursday (Oct 30).

The Ah Ge recalled, “It was difficult for me to call her ‘Mum’. Either of us will burst out laughing on-set.”

A Blessed Life, which stars Zhu Hou Ren, You Yi, Kym Ng, Brandon Wong and others, is Nanxing’s first sitcom in his acting career. Looking tanner and fitter than before, the 50-year-old, whose last production was C.L.I.F. 3, revealed he has been going on a diet to shed his tummy fat for his role, Ye Da Ji.

“Besides exercising, I have not been eating what I usually eat on a weekly basis – Laksa, Char Kway Teow and carrot cake.”

Used to wearing darker clothes, Nanxing’s role of a sunshine boy requires him to don outfits of brighter colours. Declaring during the imaging session that it was not his usual style, he asked incessantly, “Is this too young for me?” Even his co-actress could not help but tease and called him “Ah Boy”.

Wardrobe worries aside, he will have to deal with another challenge in this drama – singing. As his Da Ji loves singing and has a scene where he croons classic hit ‘Zhang San De Ge’ by Li Shou Quan, Nanxing quipped that he needs to start practicing for the song because he can’t remember the lyrics.

Chen Li Ping wants to act with Rui En in a comedy

Li Ping, who is currently filming another drama Good Luck, will turn 50 next year. While the Mary Chia ambassador has no plans to celebrate turning half-a-decade-old, she let us in on an acting project she hopes to take on next year – to act with her bosom friend Rui En in a comedy.

“[I want to] film more lighthearted dramas, no more dark genres for me. After filming Unriddle 2, everyone nearly went crazy,” Li Ping said.

She is not worried at all about Rui En’s lack of humour and wittiness too. “She tried another method of acting in The Dream Makers and we had fun acting in Joys of Life,” she shared. (Ed’s note: here are 6 other roles we’d love to see Rui En play)

Also, as her son, Xavier Tan, recently completed his Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE), the mother-of-one revealed how her husband Rayson Tan is more uptight than she is, even arranging courses for him after his papers.

Li Ping, famous for her happy-go-lucky personality, is therefore responsible for his leisure activities, adding that the family will go on a vacation after filming for Good Luck ends in December.
