If you have been to a number of weddings within the past three years, there’s a chance you would have heard Christina Perri’s ‘A Thousand Years’ being played during at least one – if not all – of the events.

However, the singer herself, who penned the piece for the soundtrack of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, is absolutely sure she won’t be performing or playing it at her own nuptials.

“No way!” she exclaimed during our interview at Equarius Hotel on Friday afternoon, a few hours before the Singapore leg of her The Head or Heart Tour. “I imagine that I’ll sing at my own wedding, but I wouldn’t sing that, and I wouldn’t want anyone else to sing that either.”

But it’s not because she has grown tired of the popular track. “I love it and I’ve already sung it at two weddings, but because I have a different relationship with the song, it would be a little weird, especially if someone else sings it,” she explained, adding that she’s been “searching for that one person to love forever”. (And yes, Christina does believe she’d be capable of loving someone for a thousand years.)

As the successful single has become synonymous with the vampire romance series, Christina got to join several of the film’s cast members on their promotional tour in different cities in 2011 – an experience she calls “one of the most ridiculous things” she’s ever done in her life, especially as a self-professed Twi-hard (a name for diehard Twilight devotees).

“I was so scared I’d call Ashley [Greene] and Jackson [Rathbone] by their characters’ names, that I didn’t say any of their names at all,” she reminisced, before letting us in on another amusing anecdote involving her suitcase, which was covered in Twilight stickers: “Everyone was pointing at my luggage when it came out of the plane, and I had to pretend that it wasn’t mine!”

With such impressive accomplishments under her belt, it’s almost hard to believe that just five years ago, the Pennsylvania native was an obscure, unsigned songwriter waitressing at a café to make ends meet. That all changed when one of her compositions, ‘Jar of Hearts’, was featured on an episode of So You Think You Can Dance. The bitter ballad, written about an ex-boyfriend, topped charts, sold millions of copies, and propelled Christina to become an overnight sensation.

“My life has changed dramatically since 2010,” she said. “My job is a billion times cooler, I spent 214 days travelling all over the world last year (when before that, I’d only been to Florida), and I’d also never performed for anyone until my big break.”

Despite all this, Christina claimed that emotionally, she’s “exactly the same as that girl who was a waitress”. She also has the same best friends, and family remains at the top of her priority list. “Those are things that I would never want to change.”

Speaking of change, Christina has a rather uncommon attitude – especially among women – towards hitting the big 3-0 in August next year. “I’m so pumped,” she expressed, without an ounce of sarcasm in her voice. “With age comes wisdom, and I can’t wait to be old and awesome and have a billion crazy stories to tell my grandchildren. So 30 is cool, but I can’t wait to get to 60.”

Christina’s concert later that evening, held at The Coliseum at Hard Rock Hotel, was a down-to-earth and short but sweet affair, lasting just an hour and fifteen minutes. While the diverse audience lapped up every set, it was clear which performances were the highlights, judging by the sudden increase in mobile phones being whipped out to record the must-remember moment: her fame kick-starter ‘Jar of Hearts’, fresher hit ‘Human’, and of course, ‘A Thousand Years’.

“That was the best performance of ‘A Thousand Years’ I’ve had with an audience. Ever, ever, ever. I swear on my life!” she exclaimed with a huge grin, after wrapping up the sudden mass karaoke session of the fan favourite (even we couldn’t help but sing along as well).

Another riotously well-received occurrence was her surprise acoustic rendition of Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’, possibly a sweet tribute to her “super great friend” (as she called the red-headed English crooner in our interview earlier). The pair has a duet on Christina’s album Head or Heart, a sprightly number called ‘Be My Forever’, which she revealed to us will be the fourth single off her album.

Christina and her band weren’t the only ones who got to perform that night. As we neared the end of the showcase, Christina split concertgoers into three parts, and taught each section to sing a different phrase (“This is not the end of me, this is the beginning”, “Hold on” and “I am still alive”), before bringing everyone’s vocals together like the conductor of an enormous choir.

The purpose of the little impromptu – at least to audiences – exercise? “Let’s fill this whole place with love and pick up anyone who has fallen down; you never know who’s having a bad day!” Christina explained beforehand.

Talk about a feel-good concert, and letting the music heal your soul.
