I’ve attended my fair share of Retrolicious concerts over the years and they are usually filled with upbeat 80s tunes that get everyone on their feet grooving and hands waving in the air.

But last night’s (Feb 7) show at Fort Canning Park, the fifth edition of the popular retro festival, took the tempo down a notch. Not that the audience minded. Despite the smaller turn out this year, the line-up of performers, 90s R&B groups All-4-One, Color Me Badd and pop idol Tommy Page, who are best known for their love ballads, kept the energy high and the audience transfixed with their romantic hits.

Retrolicious started promptly at 8pm, with the Class 95FM DJs taking to the stage dressed as 90s music stars. There was Vanilla Ice (Bobby Tonelli), the Fresh Prince of Bel Air (Jeremy Ratnam), TLC’s Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes (Yasminne Cheng), Elton John (Joe Augustine) and Kris Kross (Mike Kasem and Jean Danker).

While Mike and Jean looked hilarious in their back-to-front baggy get-up, Bobby stole the show with his last minute outfit of a gold sequined jacket and black trash bag pants - he even had the US rapper’s Pompadour haircut and dance moves down pat. We later found out that those weren’t shoulder pads stuffed under his jacket but a bra which he borrowed from his girlfriend. Sneaky.

R&B group Color Me Badd (CMB), comprising of Bryan Abrams, Kevin Thornton and Mark Calderon, opened the show with ‘All For Love’ - complete with cheesy dance moves - to the 3,000 strong crowd before slowing things down with ‘I Adore Mi Amor’ and a medley of ‘Wildflower’, ‘Forever Love’, ‘The Earth, the Sun and the Rain’ and ‘Choose’.

But the trio were not about to end on a low note. Just as they were about to begin the last song of their set, Mark asked: “Do you want to hear the naughty version? Tonight we are gonna do ‘I Wanna Sex You Up’,” eliciting screams from the crowd.

I guess after years of hearing the PG version ‘I Wanna Love You Up’ on the airwaves, it feels good to finally belt out the song as it should be sung.

Taking the stage next was Tommy Page, treating us to up-tempo singles like ‘A Zillion Kisses’ and ‘Turn On The Radio’. Clad in a glittery black suit and black bow-tie, there were times when Tommy tried to shake his body to the songs but ended up looking a little awkward. Well, dancing wasn’t his thing in the past anyway.

Wise choice then that he moved on to something slower and more intimate, performing ballads such as ‘I Think I’m In Love’ and ‘Paintings In My Mind’ on the piano, and sharing the stories behind those songs.

“I went down to a beach in LA and I saw a painter painting a picture of an old woman… I was inspired by watching how there was something real in front of him and he was making it into a painting. Then I started thinking about the paintings in my mind that would become pictures, and it inspired me to write this,” he recounted.

After serenading us, Tommy brought the crowd back up with ‘Don’t Give Up On Love’, which he performed with his back-up singer Cheesa, a quarter-finalist on the second season of The Voice, before leaving us with his most popular hits ‘I’ll Be Your Everything’ and ‘A Shoulder to Cry On’.

By then, the crowd was eager for Grammy-winning R&B group All-4-One to take the stage.

The quartet, made up of childhood friends Delious Kennedy, Jamie Jones, Alfred Nevarez, and Tony Borowiak, showed off their vocal chops by belting ‘I Can Love You Like That’, ‘I Turn To You’ and even paid tribute to Stevie Wonder with a medley of the singer’s songs.

All-4-One then got the audience to join in their a cappella hit ‘So Much In Love’ by snapping their fingers to the beat and waving their “light fingers” in the air for their final song, number one hit ‘I Swear’.

But that’s not the end.

Just when the audience were about to chant for an encore, All-4-One invited Color Me Badd and Tommy Page back on stage for a joint finale - a first for Retrolicious - of Sam Smith’s ‘Stay With Me’, making it one of the best finales in the concert’s history.
