We’d be lying if we said we didn’t walk into Mariah Carey’s The Elusive Chanteuse Show last night half-expecting to be disappointed by her performance. After all, the internet has been rife with reports that the diva bombed at her Seoul and Tokyo concerts earlier this month.

Perhaps that is why media outlets in Singapore were initially told that the show was not open for review – the last thing the songstress would want are more scathing accusations of her losing her Grammy-winning, Guinness record-breaking spark. The situation changed just a day before the show, and we were given the green light for coverage.

Thankfully, we – as well as the 12,000 other fans that filled a portion of the National Stadium – were treated to a two-hour show that was free of off-pitch (pun intended – the stage was moved away from the field to the track to keep it in pristine condition for November’s Suzuki Cup) glitches.

Unlike what was described for the purported disasters in the South Korean and Japanese capitals, Mariah nailed all her notes, whether they were delivered in her signature whistle register, a sensual breathiness, or powerfully belted out.

Although this gig was mainly in support of her latest album Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse, Mariah made sure to give long-time listeners exactly what they were waiting for: her classic favourites, such as opening tune ‘Fantasy’ and encore number ‘Always Be My Baby’, all of which had concertgoers of all ages and backgrounds cheering and singing along.

Other beloved hits she covered include ‘My All’, ‘We Belong Together’, ‘Touch My Body’ and the inspirational ‘Hero’, which she said she would “keep on singing for as long as I can”. Songs from the new record that were performed were ‘Cry’, ‘Thirsty’ and ‘Meteorite’.

In addition to her own material, Mariah presented an impromptu rendition of Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Lullaby of Birdland’ (which she admitted she “did not have time to rehearse” and that the last time she sang it, she was eight years old), and an impressive cover of The Jackson 5’s ‘I’ll Be There’ with backup vocalist Trey Lorenz.

Among the enthusiastic crowd were tennis superstars Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki, who are in town for the Women's Tennis Association Finals. Both of them even got to meet Mariah after the show (oh, the perks of being a celebrity), and posted pictures of them together on their respective Instagram pages.

Two other special guests that made a much more high profile appearance were Monroe and Moroccan, Mariah’s twin children. The doting mama took a few moments to gush about her two “angels” before dedicating ‘Supernatural’ (which features their adorable vocals) to them as a video of them played on the giant LCD screen above the platform.

The three-year-olds were then given a few seconds in the spotlight when they were brought up to the side of the stage to say hi, much to the delight of squealing audiences who immediately whipped out their mobile phone cameras to capture the sweet family moment (well, which excluded Mariah’s ex-hubby Nick Cannon, of course).

Well, that family may not have been complete, but Mariah’s “Lambily” (her fandom, a combination of the words “Lamb”, which she calls her devotees, and “family”) were certainly out in full force that night.
