8 K-celebs we welcomed back from the army in 2017

It’s always a dark time for fans when they have to bid goodbye to their oppas for almost two years as they serve in the army. Fast forward 21 months later, and there’s reason to celebrate as these oppas (in Singlish, anyway) "ORD loh!" - or in English, get discharged from the army.

It’s been a bumper year of military discharges, with three members of Super Junior and an actor we’ve been waiting to see for what seems to be the longest time among those returning back to the limelight.

We round up a list of those whose military discharge you might have missed, and count our blessings that the entertainment industry welcomed back some of its brightest stars.

Read on for more.

SS501 Kim Hyun Joong

Discharge date: February 11

SS501’s leader Kim Hyun Joong was the first one on our list to be discharged from the army this year. While he hasn’t jumped straight back into activities, he does have a concert in Seoul slated to take place on December 2 as a way to see his fans for the first time in a long time.

He’s been staying under the radar as an ongoing legal case with his ex-girlfriend continues. The pair has been engaged in a legal tussle even before he enlisted for his service, which is related to allegations of her fabricating stories and him assaulting her.

Discharge date: April 20

Yunho showed that he’s more than just a pretty face during his army service, where he was selected as best trainee during the first months of his service, along with being selected a special class soldier, and an honourary citizen of Yangju, where he did most of his service.

He’s jumped back into promotions, and uh, suffered an unfortunate accident when he ripped his pants at the SMTOWN concert in Seoul, flashing his red underwear for everyone to see. He’s taken it in stride, however, and has also returned to acting with currently airing drama, Melo Holic, opposite Kyung Soo Jin.

Discharge date: July 12

With hellos also come goodbyes. While we welcomed back three Super Junior members this year (more on that in later slides), we also said goodbye to the two youngest members, Ryeowook and Kyuhyun.

Eunhyuk was the first of the EunSiHae (Eunhyuk, Siwon, Donghae) trio to return, where fans trolled him back for all the trolling that he’s done (he asked them to shave their heads multiple times while he was in the army), holding up a huge poster that reminded him that no, they did not shave a single lock of hair off. Now this is one idol-fan dynamic that we’d keep our eyes on.

Super Junior’s Donghae

Discharge date: July 14

Two days after Eunhyuk was discharged, Donghae also returned back to civilian life as he completed his stint at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. In his Instagram post, where he thanked the fans for greeting him upon his discharge, he promised, “From now on, I’ll make sure you all are never lonely again.” Awww.

Soon after their discharge, Donghae and Eunhyuk (collectively known as Super Junior-D&E) held their fan meeting, Hello Again, on July 23, where they properly said hello again (get it?) to their fans after two years.

Discharge date: August 18

Also a part of the Seoul Metropolitan Police department’s special promotional unit along with Donghae and Siwon, Changmin was even discharged on the same day as Siwon (which made quite a sight for sore eyes, if you ask us).

Shortly after his discharge, TVXQ kicked off their TVXQ! ASIA PRESS TOUR, which took them to Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong in the span of three days to greet the members of the press and share more about their upcoming plans for the group. They’ve also started on two separate concert tours, with the first being the Tohoshinki LIVE TOUR 2017 ~Begin Again~ in Japan, and the other being TVXQ! Special Comeback Live – YouR PresenT held in various cities.

Super Junior’s Siwon

Discharge date: August 18

It seemed that it was all smooth-sailing for Siwon as he returned from the army, with him picking up a leading role in the drama Revolutionary Love opposite Kang Sora, along with diving headfirst into Super Junior’s comeback preparations.

However, he’s staying under the radar now after his family became embroiled in controversy - his pet dog, Bugsy, bit someone living in the same apartment complex as his family, and the victim ultimately passed away from a secondary infection. Siwon has apologised and taken full responsibility, but public opinion remains largely critical of him and his family.

JYJ's Park Yoochun

Discharge date: August 25

Yoochun was in the headlines even prior to his military discharge because of the rape allegations that were raised against him. He was ultimately found not guilty of sexual assault but the public eye remained on him as he got engaged to non-celebrity Hwang Hana.

They were supposed to wed on September 10, which was then pushed back to September 20, and has since been postponed indefinitely. A source close to the artiste then shared that they have postponed the wedding indefinitely as they have not picked a date yet, and stressed that they are still together and very much in love.

Lee Seung Gi

Discharge date: October 31

Well, it seems like forever since Lee Seung Gi has been in army - seriously, has it only been two years? It seems like after serving in the special forces, Seung Gi is wasting no time in diving right back to work - he has confirmed his first drama role after his discharge, and he will be playing the Monkey King (known as Sun Wukong in the original) in tvN’s upcoming drama, Hwayugi. The series is a remake of popular Chinese folklore story Journey to the West, and will also star Cha Seung Won and Oh Yeon Seo.

We’ll also be getting a glimpse of him at the upcoming 2017 Asia Artist Awards, which will be held in Seoul on November 15. Yay!
