These Hallyu actors and actresses showed a sexy side you certainly won’t find in a typical K-drama

Despite the chaste image that K-pop and K-dramas are generally known for, quite a number of actors have gone down the R-rated route by shedding their clothes and indulging in a romp between the sheets (or other places) on screen.

The latest example is action thriller Real, which garnered controversy before it was even released due to the extensive media play involving certain racy sequences involving stars Kim Soo Hyun and former f(x) member Sulli. As soon as the flick hit theatres, an illegal recording of a topless Sulli giving, um, “lip service” (go figure) to Soo Hyun were immediately leaked and went viral, stirring up even more chatter and proving that her innocent image à la ‘Electric Shock’ is long gone.

Unfortunately for them, their risky and risqué move didn’t garner them any favours with reviewers, who pretty much ripped the film to shreds for its cheap sexcapades, plot (or lack thereof) and poorly-done special effects. However, the attention surrounding the erotic bits certainly helped them achieve a modest box office opening, all thanks to curious cinemagoers.

Besides Soo Hyun and Sulli, there are plenty of other hot Hallyu stars who have dared to bare it all (minus full frontal nudity, with the exception of one) for the sake of art. Brace yourselves, and read on to meet some of them:

Song Seung Heon, Lim Ji Yeon in ‘Obsessed’

The handsome heartthrob took one huge step into a whole new, not-so-family-friendly zone almost two decades since his debut when he signed up to play a colonel who falls in love – and lust – with his subordinate’s wife.

While Seung Heon is no stranger to going shirtless on screen (with a physique like his, it would be a crime not to do it), Obsessed showed viewers a whole new side of him quite literally: butt-naked and writhing around (to put it in a PG-rated way) in bed or in a car with Ji Yeon, who also bared it all – a bold move for a newbie actress.

Seung Heon later shared in interviews that his age and a yearning for change played a part in getting him to agree to the racy project, and that he wouldn’t have had enough confidence and experience to do so in his twenties. Fans are probably thinking: better late than never!

Before Sung Hyun’s most recent and more wholesome turn as a detective in crime thriller Voice, the former child star tackled his first nude and sex scene in Walking Street. Set in the infamous Thai red-light district after which it is named, the gritty flick didn’t shy away from explicit – and sometimes violent – content involving the three lead actors.

During the cast’s visit here for the movie’s premiere at the Singapore International Film Festival, the trio told Toggle that they – gasp! – showed the raunchy film to their friends and family, but the responses were all positive and encouraging. Well now, everyone certainly needs such supportive (no matter what) people in their lives.

Song Ji Hyo, Jo In Sung in ‘A Frozen Flower’

Undoubtedly one of the most infamous examples of Hallyu bigwigs getting down and dirty on the big screen (before Real came along, at least), Ji Hyo and In Sung play a queen and a soldier who are commanded by the king to sleep together to produce an heir for him.

Plenty of titillating trysts ensue – in all sorts of places and in all kinds of positions – before and after the two of them really fall into forbidden love. And yes, breasts and buttocks are bared, movements are simulated, and the camera doesn’t bother looking away, whether you like it or not.

These days, however, both actors are known for much more family-friendly images: Ji Hyo as a Running Man regular and In Sung as a suave leading man.

With her more recent internationally-acclaimed roles in Goblin and Cheese in the Trap, it’s easy to forget that Go Eun made her debut in the Lolita-esque A Muse (also known as Eunkyo), which includes a long and graphic sex scene between her and Moo Yeol while Park Hae Il’s character looks on jealously (creepy!).

While Go Eun confessed that she felt embarrassed and nervous before the scandalous shoot – and we don’t blame her one bit – she said that once the cameras started rolling, she became immersed in her role. For Moo Yeol, on the other hand, it was uncomfortable for him because he was in a relationship.

Well, neither of them had anything to worry about: the film catapulted Go Eun to instant stardom, and Moo Yeol ended up marrying his then-girlfriend Yoon Seung Ah a few years later. All’s well that ends well.

Kim Rae Won, Bae Doo Na in ‘Plum Blossom’

When Doo Na was still mulling over whether to accept a role in controversial, nude scene-filled Plum Blossom, it was her mother – of all people! – who urged her to take on the challenge by asking her if it made sense for an actress to shun bedroom scenes because she was afraid of showing her body.

Well, if there were any fears, Doo Na certainly conquered them quite thoroughly. The coming-of-age flick is said to boast a bedroom scene every seven minutes, and while not all of them involve Doo Na and Rae Won, they are the main attractions.

That wasn’t the last time Doo Na stripped on screen: she would later do so again in Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Cloud Atlas and Sense8. Yup, it’s safe to say that she is way past any apprehensions about shedding her clothes for work.

Oh Ji Ho, Lee Ji Hyun in ‘La Belle’

Long before he and his baby daughter were charming viewers on The Return of Superman, Ji Ho landed his first major movie role in La Belle – a rather unconventional and daring one, if we do say so, thanks to the copious amounts of salacious shenanigans he indulges in with Ji Hyun on screen.

What makes their fictional lovemaking stand out from the rest, however, is the fact that they trained with dancer Ahn Eun Mi for a month to learn how to move their bodies gracefully and fluidly, rather than just squirming about crassly between the sheets. Hey, might as well make all that action look pretty, right?

With a title like that, it’s no surprise that Sweet Sex and Love is chock-full of racy rendezvouses between its two main characters, whose no-strings-attached hook-ups eventually graduate into something more (or does it?).

While opinions are divided on whether the actual storyline behind all that sex is strong enough, most viewers can agree on one thing: both stars are darn good-looking folks with banging bodies. Perhaps that is why director Bong Man Dae, who is also known for his work on adult films, decided to showcase their naked forms so much?

The year after this erotic picture was released, Sung Soo and Seo Hyung nabbed supporting roles in far more family-friendly dramas Full House and Lovers in Paris respectively. Talk about a change of scenery!

While the other thespians on this list stop short of showing their most private bits on screen, Thirst has the honour of being the first mainstream Korean film to feature full-frontal male nudity. The shocking shot happens for a few fleeting seconds when Kang Ho’s character is caught sexually assaulting a camper.

Earlier in the film, we also see Ok Bin (who stars in upcoming film The Villainess) lose her bra for a rather lengthy session with Kang Ho. Even though she was still relatively new at that time, her boldness and impressive performance garnered her numerous nominations at various award shows, while Kang Ho himself nabbed Best Actor several times.

Special mention: Cha Tae Hyun in ‘My Sassy Girl’

Although there isn’t any implied copulation in this classic, we felt it deserved a special mention simply for taking a shower scene – which is a dime a dozen in K-dramas, but only shown from the waist up – to a whole new level by letting the camera linger on Tae Hyun’s tush for a good 15 seconds, after which he sneaks out in nothing but a plastic water scoop over his vital parts.

During an appearance on a variety show a few years ago, the actor jokingly complained about the scene, which was shared with leading lady Jun Ji Hyun. “Jun Ji Hyun had to act as if she was sleeping, but how do I know if she really was sleeping? I’m sure she wasn’t!”

We don’t think Ji Hyun sneaking a peek or not makes any difference because his exposed rear is now immortalised on film for generations to see anyway.
