Has it really been a year since SEVENTEEN’s previous visit to our shores? Since then, the 13-member K-pop group has gone from strength to strength, releasing their successful mini album Al1 and embarking on their first world tour Diamond Edge.

We witnessed proof of their burgeoning popularity at yesterday’s showcase: long before the gig was scheduled to kick off, the audience in the Suntec Convention Centre was already getting excited over the music videos and candid clips that were being played on the big screens. The fan frenzy reached fever pitch when SEVENTEEN’s latest track, catchy EDM hit ‘Don’t Wanna Cry’, was played, which also signalled the start of the concert.

Emerging on stage in colourful suits, the boys burst into their first songs of the night as CARATs (the fandom name) cheered, sang along and waved their lightsticks around. After popular bops ‘Mansae’ and ‘Boom Boom’ were presented, members Vernon and Mingyu appeared and announced that they were about to do “something we’ve never done before”.

The new activity turned out to be a game called “do not blink”. Here’s how it was supposed to work: Vernon and Mingyu would both look straight into the live feed camera (their piercing stares drove fans absolutely wild) and - as you can probably tell from the title - the first person who blinks loses. Vernon emerged victorious, and Mingyu’s punishment was to dole out acts of aegyo (cuteness), which - despite his obvious shyness and reluctance - still drew passionate screams from the floor.

The musical performances continued with the group being split up into their subunits. The Vocal Team (Woozi, Jeonghan, Joshua, DK and Seungkwan) was up first, delivering sultry renditions of ‘We Gonna Make It Shine’ and ‘Don’t Listen’ amongst plush furniture that made us feel like we encountered a coven of vampires (there were even castles and bats in the background video).

The Hip-hop Team’s S.Coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu and Vernon were next, flaunting their rap skills and swag, followed by the Performance Team’s Hoshi, Jun, The8 and Dino, whose smooth moves were the highlight of their item. Chinese members Jun and The8 also had their time to shine with ‘My I’, which they presented with a graceful dance performance using a long ribbon as a prop.

Towards the end of the two-hour show, SEVENTEEN showed their appreciation for CARATs with a video featuring each of the members dedicating a sweet message to fans. The members also lavished praise and love on concertgoers during their final speech, and ended the event by taking a big - very big - group photo with everyone in the hall.
