Celebrities with unusual pets

Sure, dogs and cats are cool, but how many people can say they have – or had – crocodiles or sugar gliders as animal companions?

Celebrities with unusual pets

These days, it seems like every famous person has a furry friend to show off on social media (the newest local celebrity paw-rent is Elvin Ng, who adopted an 8-year-old beagle last month). We’re not complaining, of course – everyone loves seeing cute animal antics, and to witness a widely-adored figure go gaga over their fur-kid is an amusing, heart-warming sight in itself.

While the most popular and common companions are dogs and cats, there are a few stars who trod a more unconventional path by opting for more exotic creatures – such as flying squirrels, snakes and sugar gliders, to name a few – as their critter companions. Click through to meet some of them!

Sugar gliders

The world was introduced to Odeng and Eomuk (both words mean “fishcake” in Korean) on BTS’s Comeback Show in September, and needless to say, the tiny things caused quite a stir because well, look at them! Doesn’t this make you want to have one of your own?

Well, that’s precisely what made Jin hesitate to show his new fur-kids off at first, as he was worried it would encourage impulsive, irresponsible buys. “Make sure you think it through before deciding if you’re ready to raise one,” he urged in the video.

Point taken. In that case, we’ll happily settle with whatever Jin lets us see of them on social media. By the way, do you think Odeng and Eomuk qualify as bias wreckers? Because they’ve certainly stolen our hearts.

Flying squirrel

If anyone needs an idea of how much BamBam dotes on his Shabu Shabu, a wide-eyed and ridiculously plush-looking flying squirrel, just watch the live broadcast video in which he introduced the cuddly rodent from three months ago.

According to the Thailand-born Korean idol, his mum was the one who bought the critter and christened it, but judging from the way he treats it, you’d think BamBam was the one who went the pet store and fell head over heels with it before bringing it home.

Although he got peed and pooped on in the video, he made excuses for his fur-kid’s behaviour – reminding us of a spoilt child’s parents who can never get mad at their bundle of terror – and still continued to let it walk all over him (literally). Then again, we’d probably do the same.

Pigs

While the pop star’s many canines and felines are featured more heavily on her Instagram, her devotion to her two pigs is on a whole other level: she skipped an entire concert tour for her new album – which would undoubtedly have netted her a pretty penny – just to take care of them.

“Literally the only reason I’m not touring is because of those f***ing pigs; that’s how much I love those pigs,” she revealed on Howard Stern’s radio show. The former child star has also admitted to having “spa days”, complete with a coconut oil mask, with Pig (who used to be known as Bubba Sue), even though her beau Liam Hemsworth thinks it’s “too much” (is that jealousy we detect?).

In fact, Miley has stated that she “love[s] pigs more than kids”, when she was asked if she ever thought about starting a family with Liam. We guess they could open and run a farm or animal shelter together instead?

Snake, lizard, crocodile

While most folks would rather eat their shoe than live under the same roof as a slithering serpent, the singers revealed on a variety show several years ago that they pretty much had a mini reptile zoo in their dorm, consisting of snakes, a lizard and even a small crocodile.

There’s a reason for their unorthodox selection of pets: they’re allergic to fur, but still wanted animal companions. The croc and lizard (which, to be honest, look cuter and cuter the more we look at them) belong to G.O, while Mir is the snake charmer.

It’s been a while since we saw or heard anything about their scale-kids, especially since they both enlisted for their mandatory military service last year, but we hope that if they’re still around, they’re still happy and healthy – no matter how frightening others find them.

EXO’s Chanyeol

Ferret

Here’s your squeal-worthy trivia of the day: the lanky idol rapper was part of a ferret society when he was a kid. Who could ever have guessed that this cute and – let’s admit it – slightly dorky little kid would one day grow up to become part of one of the biggest K-pop groups in the world?

Chanyeol also had his own ferret friend named Ddori, but it sadly went missing in 2003 (insert teary emoji here). He then remained pet-less for a very long time thanks to an allergy he developed in high school, but earlier this year, he introduced us to Toben, a precious black pup whose fur bore a resemblance to its famous owner’s hair at that time. However, they can’t live together – Toben stays with Chanyeol’s family instead – as Chanyeol reportedly still develops a rash when they come into contact (more teary emojis here).

What makes this all even sadder is that Chanyeol is a well-known animal lover. Why do bad things always happen to good people?

Tortoises

The shelled reptile isn’t exactly the first critter we’d think of when choosing an affectionate pet, but those who are familiar with the singer’s oddball personality are probably thinking, “He would.”

Sure enough, they (there were three of them) ended up making poor Yesung feel even lonelier than before as they constantly ignored him and never came when he called. In all honesty though, what was he expecting from one of the slowest animals in the world? Still, this all makes for a highly entertaining and classic Super Junior fun fact even to this day.

In 2011, Yesung donated one of the tortoises, Ddangkkoma, to an aquarium as she was getting too difficult to take care of. They were reunited last year but uh, it looks like Ddangkkoma was too shy to meet her oppa.

Tortoises

Nicholas Tse’s asthma prevented him from having furry pets like dogs, so he grew up surrounded by hairless alternatives like hedgehogs, fish and tortoises, the last of which are a clear favourite – he claimed that at one point, there were 30 of the shelled creatures in the Tse household, and one of them has even joined him on stage at a concert.

“I think turtles are just as smart, loyal, and cute as dogs,” he gushed in a blog post, adding that every time he returned home from work, they would “cuddle around [him]” (sounds cute, but do they really do that? Yesung should take some notes from him).

Unfortunately, his favourite tortoise was stolen after she was loaned to a reptile exhibition in Hong Kong about 10 years ago. While we’re still wondering how someone got away with kidnapping 45kg of scales and shell, we hope she is safe and happy wherever she is.

Pig

Xiao Zhu (which means “Little Pig”, a nickname Show Luo gained in high school for being overweight) got into some trouble with his neighbours in 2013 thanks to his not-so-xiao zhu (specifically, a 200 kilogram hog), who lived on the rooftop of his apartment.

Aside from the obvious problem of the smell, one particularly hapless resident living just below the rooftop complained of water seepage problems due to the animal’s constant trampling. Others were also fearful of getting attacked, causing them to avoid the area altogether.

Fortunately for them, Show immediately took responsibility and a few months later, he spent NT$35 million (approximately S$1.57 million) on a plot of land to build a lavish animal shelter to house not only his pig, but also 30 cats and dogs. Someone is living every young critter lover’s dream.

Ferret, kinkajou, pig, flying squirrel

Think “Hollywood celebrities with exotic pets” and the hotel heiress will undoubtedly be one of the first to pop into mind. Besides her army of pooches, Paris has also been – or still is – a proud paw-rent to several more unusual specimen, namely several wriggly ferrets, a pot-belled pig (called Princess Pigelette, because why not), a flying squirrel, and a unique mammal called the kinkajou.

Like their famous owner, the animals enjoy a cushy, glamorous life, and some have even made public appearances at events with Paris. However, one of the biggest headline makers was the kinkajou, Baby Luv, who got a little feisty one day in 2006 and literally bit the hand – or rather, the arm – that feeds it, sending Paris to the emergency room for a tetanus shot.

We’re unsure what became of Baby Luv after that incident, but one thing’s for sure: Paris has not stopped treating her fur-babies like royalty – her dogs live in a two-storey mansion that comes complete with air-conditioning and a chandelier. #doghousegoals

Chinchilla

Strict laws make it difficult or plain impossible to own exotic pets in Singapore, so the closest local example we have is a fictional one, namely Jeanette Aw’s character Yan and her – actually, her ex-boyfriend’s – chinchilla in Channel U rom-com Let It Go.

In the show, she keeps the snuggly rodent in the hopes of getting back together with her former beau. We don’t know about you, but if we were her, we wouldn’t want to “let it go” (heh, get it?) whether we were pining for our lost love or not because as the iconic line from Despicable Me goes, “IT’S SO FLUFFY, I’M GONNA DIE!”

Jeanette herself was smitten by her tiny co-star, whose real name is Ace, despite the fact that it, er, treated her as its toilet. We’d forgive it too.
