South Korean café chain dal.komm COFFEE, whose claim to fame is being featured in top dramas Descendants of the Sun and Goblin, recently launched its first store in Singapore, and gracing yesterday’s grand opening was self-proclaimed coffee lover Kang Gary.

“Coffee is essential for artists – I drink up to six cups a day!” declared the rapper at a press conference before his meet-and-greet session at The Centrepoint. “I think I will need thousands of cups of coffee while working on my new album.”

You read that right: Gary has plans to drop a record sometime this year, although the details remain fuzzy. In an interview with Toggle, he explained, “I have different ideas every day and they’re always evolving, so right now, there’s no exact concept for my album.” He also shared that while there still isn’t a set date for its release, it will take place in 2017.

Hearing new material from the former Running Man regular will no doubt be a relief for his fans, who were left heartbroken when he announced his shocking departure from the wildly popular variety programme last year in order to concentrate on his music career.

When we asked if he’s been able to adjust to his new schedule, the 38-year-old admitted that he does “feel like there’s something missing on Mondays (the day Running Man is usually filmed)”, but reiterated his decision to prioritise “rapper Gary” over “variety star Gary”.

Running Man can still be a fun and enjoyable show without me,” he said.

“Actor Gary”, on the other hand, is not in the cards at the moment. “I feel like if I were to step into the world of acting, my fans would be like, ‘Why aren’t you making music!?’” he said with a chuckle. “Many of them are already demanding for new songs, and it’s giving me a lot of stress! (laughs)”

Hopefully, his listeners, while understandably excited for updates, will take it easy on him because that burden could be counterproductive. “In order to make the best music, it has to flow freely from the musician, so it’s not ideal for me to feel pressured,” he said. However, he does acknowledge that the stress drives him to work harder as well.

But what if the small or silver screen were to beckon him one day? “If I were 10 years younger I would have loved to do (serious) action, but at my age, playing a comedic action hero would be better,” he mused.

Don’t worry, Gary, we think there are many folks who can’t believe that you’re turning 39 in two weeks’ time (on February 24). Happy birthday in advance!
