Lee Jong Suk got all hot and bothered on the set of W

Jong Suk’s trip to Singapore marks his first time to our sunny shores, but unfortunately, he didn’t have the chance to have some touristy fun due to his tight schedule.

“I did ask if I was allowed to stay longer because I heard this place is great but I can’t, so I’m sad,” he lamented. Hopefully, he had better luck sampling the local cuisine. “I asked my manager what to eat, and he said the chilli crab is famous here, so I’m definitely going to have that.”

However, Jong Suk will have something to look forward to when he returns to Korea. “I gave Kim Woo Bin a call, and we are going to go out for a meal when I’m back,” he said, referring to his close friend and fellow model-turned-actor.

Ever since his breakthrough in School 2013, Jong Suk has continued his steady climb up the popularity ranks with roles in dramas I Can Hear Your Voice, Doctor Stranger and Pinocchio, as well as films No Breathing and Hot Young Bloods.

While he has come to be known for his usually wholesome and heroic image in all of his projects, fans will see a completely different side of him in his next onscreen venture VIP, in which he plays a ruthless villain for the very first time.

“My character is the son of a North Korean official who has no emotion and no empathy,” he said. “Since I’m trying something new, I do feel a bit of fear.”

Sadly, work means that Jong Suk “cannot afford to have any special plans” over the Christmas holidays. “So I guess the only special plan I have is to shoot the movie well,” he said, before flashing a sheepish grin that left the press conference attendees chuckling.

At about 7.10pm last night, the Event Hall at Big Box erupted into an excited frenzy as Jong Suk ascended from underneath the platform, all ready for his Variety fan meeting.

For an hour and a half, he continued to make the predominantly female audience scream, cheer and swoon over pretty much anything he did, from small things like responding to the host in English (“I’m ready!”) to displaying extremely affectionate behaviour with the fans who got to join him on stage.

Those four fortunate devotees soon became the envy of all the others in the room thanks to their intimate interactions with their idol. While one of them was sweetly serenaded by Jong Suk, the others got to enjoy typical Korean fan meeting treats: receiving a back hug, taking a wefie and getting a shoulder massage.

Jong Suk also stepped out of his comfort zone to deliver four musical performances, including a cover of Zion.T’s ‘Eat’. Despite his less-than-stellar vocal abilities, listeners lapped it all up, even when he failed (adorably) to hit a high note. After all, it’s the thought and effort that counts, right?

Little did Jong Suk know that one of his Singapore fan clubs had also prepared something special for him at the end. After a touching video tribute, everyone in the hall was requested to raise a banner reading “We are thankful because you exist”.

Visibly touched by the gesture (the emcee even claimed that he was starting to tear up a little bit), Jong Suk promised to visit Singapore again as soon as possible. “Thank you for being here even though the weather was bad,” he said, referring to the heavy shower not long before the event. “I don’t know why I waited so long; I should have come here sooner.”

Well, you know what they say: better late than never!
