Work comes before settling down (for now), says Rain

Korean singer-actor Rain needs no introduction to most followers of K-entertainment: the 34-year-old made his solo debut as a singer in 2002 and kicked off his acting career a year after. Fast forward more than a decade later, and the successful entertainer remains down-to-earth while being able to handle himself with the flair of an industry veteran.

Jetting into town two days before wrapping up his concert tour, Rain Tour THE SQUALL on our little red dot, Rain spoke to Toggle in a closed-door interview an hour before his press conference at the Resorts World Convention Centre.

Flanked by an impressive entourage, he greeted us warmly in English before proceeding with the interview. “I think the word ‘accomplishment’ is a really big word to use, and to pinpoint one single thing that I feel is my biggest accomplishment (in my career thus far) is not that easy. If I had to choose, I’d say that being here and still being able to do what I love, in itself, is already a blessing,” he mused.

Speaking excitedly about his upcoming comeback - his first in three years - he let on that an R&B track on the album will see him collaborate with PSY (of ‘Gangnam Style’ fame). In addition, he will be presenting a variety of genres, including hip hop, which will ultimately be able to showcase his versatility.

When speaking about his plans and resolutions for the coming year, Rain chuckled that instead of making plans a year ahead, he compartmentalises his mental to-do lists into three, six, and nine year plans.

“I’ll be debuting a new boy band in 2017 or 2018 at the latest, so we’re still preparing for that. I also have plans to shoot a drama or movie early next year,” he explained. Given Rain’s hectic work schedule, we asked if spending time with his loved ones is part of that plan as well.

“Of course, I try to spend as much time as I can, but it all depends on my work schedule as well,” he admitted. In the longer term, however, he let on that starting a family is something that he is considering as part of his six or nine-year plans. For those not in the know, he has been in a stable relationship with Korean actress Kim Tae Hee for close to four years.

While questions on his career were met with little or no reaction from his entourage, their ears perked up once his plans for his personal life were discussed, with his minders moving in to attempt to stop any more probing. Their worries were clearly unfounded, however, as he answered in a way that sated our curiosity while maintaining the focus of the interview on his music and concert - and that’s an accomplishment in itself.
