A “Perfect” night with Ed Sheeran in Singapore

It’s hard to believe that the British singer fractured both his arms just last month

As much as we thoroughly enjoyed Ed Sheeran’s sold-out gig at the Singapore Indoor Stadium last night, there were also fleeting moments when we wondered if he should be exerting that much force while strumming his multiple guitars on stage.

For those who are wondering why we would say such a thing, let us explain: last month, the redheaded British crooner was forced to call off several tour stops in Asia following a bicycle accident that fractured both his arms. Ouch.

Fortunately for us in the Lion City, he recovered well enough for this weekend’s shows to go on – although we’re not sure if his doctors would wince at how aggressively he played his instrument at times (the crowd loved it, though).

“You may or may not know that about six weeks ago, I broke my arms,” the 26-year-old told the audience after an energetic rendition of ‘Castle on the Hill’, the first song of the evening. “I’ve never been a situation where I’ve not been able to play music, so it was the most depressing six weeks of my life.”

He reiterated his joy at being able to perform again a while later. “I can’t tell you how happy I am to be on stage; I don’t like cancelling shows.”

Despite the dramatic venue and seating capacity upgrade from Ed’s last recital in town over two years ago, last night’s concert still exuded the vibe and intimacy of an unplugged showcase (yes, even with the presence of huge, fancy LED screens and 10,000 passionate-and-not-afraid-to-show-it fans).

We’re chalking that cosy feeling up to Ed’s usual one-man show style – where he’s armed with nothing but his guitar, loop pedal and oodles of talent – and loads of casual bantering, during which he mostly urged the congregation to let loose and sing and dance along to him.

Not that they needed any persuasion. Besides the deafening cheers that greeted the recognisable intros of Ed’s tracks (more popular hits such as ‘Perfect’, ‘Thinking Out Loud’, ‘Shape of You’ and ‘Photograph’ garnered louder receptions), concertgoers did not disappoint when it came to obliging his requests to “sing as loud and as out of tune as you want” and “do your worst dancing and enjoy yourself”.

After all, isn’t that what concerts are all about?

The second night of Ed Sheeran Live in Singapore takes place tonight (Nov 12), 8pm at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
