Age – and a high-profile battle with breast cancer a decade ago – has done nothing to slow Kylie Minogue down, as thousands of concertgoers witnessed last night (September 16).

Rounding off the first night of this year’s Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix at the sprawling Padang (which now boasts a different layout from previous years that allows more fans to be closer to the stage), the 48-year-old Australian diva was a sizzling ball of energy from start to finish, delighting audiences with live renditions of songs from across an impressive 30-year-long music career.

While the crowd atmosphere was slightly more lacking when lesser-known tracks were performed, it immediately picked up when smash hits such as ‘On a Night Like This’, ‘Love at First Sight’, ‘Spinning Around’ and ‘Can’t Get You Out of My Head’ came on, as evidenced by the louder cheers and increased sight of lit-up phone screens dotting the floor. 80s pop anthems ‘The Locomotion’ and ‘I Should Be So Lucky’, Kylie’s very first two singles, were also extremely well-received, despite her initial apprehension about the audience’s familiarity with them.

Just as eye-catching as Kylie herself were the trippy background videos, flashy lights, weird-and-wonderfully-dressed backup dancers, and striking stage props, which included a giant disco ball and huge letters that spelled out “KYLIE”. Add that to the catchy dance numbers that resonated throughout the area, and it felt like the Padang had been transformed into one big outdoor discotheque.

Despite the larger-than-life showcase, Kylie made sure to try and make things feel a little more intimate with the occasional chit-chat between sets. She even displayed her funny, punny side when, after making a remark about our island’s notorious heat, she said, “I’m going to stand by this fan [referring to an actual machine] – oh, you’re a fan too [referring to the excited front row attendees near her]!”

She also made the obligatory shout-out to the local cuisine (chicken rice was specified) and picked out a woman from the audience to ask, “Are you in love?” (she was, and the lucky guy was standing right next to her.)

Kylie’s signature disco-pop sound took a backseat for an acoustic version of ‘I Believe in You’, which she dedicated to her devotees, particularly those who “have been with me for such a long time now”. “Singapore is a destination I travelled to very early on in my career, so to be back almost 30 years later is incredible,” she gushed.

And she is already keen on making her next visit. “Mental note: come back to Singapore as soon as possible,” she declared earlier in the concert, before expressing her hope to return again as she wrapped up the show with ‘Into the Blue’.

We’re sure fans won’t be able to keep that promising thought out of their heads until then.

Queen + Adam Lambert will be performing at 10.30pm tonight (September 17) and Imagine Dragons will be performing at 10.30pm tomorrow night (September 18) at Zone 4 Padang Stage. For more information, visit the Singapore GP website, and stay tuned to Toggle for our coverage!
