The Backstreet Boys: still impossible not to sing along to

Backstreet’s Back in Singapore! And they proved that they’ve still got the moves – even after 25 years

It’s been a long time since the Backstreet Boys (BSB) outgrew the “boys” part of their name – their ages now range from 37 to 46 – but judging from the audience reception at their Singapore showcase last Saturday night (Oct 21), we don’t think fans will ever outgrow the quintet’s classic tunes.

Even the uncomfortable humidity in the National Stadium was not enough to stop tens of thousands of concertgoers from singing, dancing and partying (like it was the 90s/early 2000s again) for two nostalgia-filled hours. It didn’t seem to affect Nick Carter, AJ McLean, Brian Littrell, Kevin Richardson or Howie Dorough’s performances either – they proved that they’ve still got it even after almost 25 years in the biz.

“We love coming back to Singapore because we always feel the love,” declared Howie at one point between sets. “Thank you guys for keeping the Backstreet pride alive.” Singapore feels the love too: the group was last here in 2015, and our little red dot is the only Asian stop for their Larger Than Life tour.

Other factors that could have – but absolutely did not – lead to a lacklustre presentation were the members’ ages and recently-acquired dad bods (let’s be real: they’re not as green or lean as they were in their prime). Add those to the fact that they’ve very likely performed the same tracks thousands upon thousands of times, and there’s a risk of obvious fatigue.

Fortunately for us, that wasn’t the case, and BSB delivered hit after hit with the same feverish passion throughout, proving that they’ve still got the swag, stamina and skill – as much as any other musical group literally half their ages.

Responding with similar enthusiasm was the crowd, who didn’t bother staying in their seats most of the time. We’re speaking from experience when we say it was virtually impossible to sit still as beloved tracks like ‘I Want It That Way’, ‘Drowning’, ‘As Long As You Love Me’ (which Brian declared to be his personal favourite), ‘Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)’ and many more were blasted throughout the arena.

If someone challenged us not to sing along to a single word or boogie to a beat for the entire night, we would have lost. Terribly. And we know everyone else who was there with us would agree: local actor Desmond Tan, who was in the first few rows, shared several clips of himself passionately joining in the mass karaoke session.

Goosebumps-inducing harmonies and catchy bops weren’t all BSB had to give (Ed’s note/complaint: ‘All I Have to Give’ was not included in the set list). Every now and then, folding chairs, canes and/or scantily-clad backup dancers would join the band on stage, during which Nick, AJ, Brian, Kevin and Howie got to flaunt some sensual choreography as well.

Looks like in their world, one can never get too old for hip thrusts and gyrating – just like we’ll never get too old for cheesy 90s pop goodness, or too tired of screaming “ain’t nothing but a heartache” at the top of our lungs.
