You know how some actors like to act all surprised after winning awards? Not Aloysius Pang.
Clearly caught off guard by his Best Newcomer win, the 24-year-old, who was suffering an eye infection, was still a little lost for words when reporters swarmed the actor backstage at the Star Awards.
“I am still overwhelmed. When I went on stage, I did not say anything that I had planned to say. It was all gibber gabber. Currently, I don’t even remember what I said just now… I hope it was okay,” he said.
In fact, Aloysius was so certain that fellow nominee Carrie Wong would take the trophy, he did not prepare an acceptance speech and was all ready to shake her hand and lead her to the stage when the winner was announced.
Hot favourite Carrie, on the other hand, told Toggle that she was prepared for the worst so was not overly sad about the loss.“I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed… [But] I feel I have a long way to go in my acting journey and it’s okay that I did not win any acting awards this year. I will continue to work hard and next time, I will win Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress,” said the 21-year-old determinedly.
Attributing his win to a combination of hard work and luck, Aloysius believed that he had scored a fair number of roles in the past year that gave him the opportunity to shine.
Noted Aloysius: “If they (other Best Newcomer nominees) had my roles, they might have performed better than me.”
“Or maybe my red eye brought me luck,” he quipped.
When asked how he plans to celebrate his first Star Awards victory, Aloysius, who had also been nominated for Best Supporting Actor, said he could not wait to go home to show his parents his trophy because “I would not win this award if not for them”.
“[Since young] I’ve never won anything or gone on stage for something good like this. As a matter of fact, whenever I go on stage it’s always for reprimands or when the teachers want to punish me,” said Aloysius.
“I feel I am still trying to pay back for what I did in the past… so bit by bit I am hoping I can be the proud son that they’ve always wanted.”
