It was a victorious night for Quan Yi Fong and Pornsak, who not only won their first trophies in the “Best Info-Ed Programme Host” and “Best Variety Show Host” categories respectively, but were also successfully inducted into the coveted “Top 10 Favourite Female and Male Artistes” lists.
Accurately predicted by Toggle, Yi Fong was crowned the Best Info-Ed Programme Host for her performance in Where To Stay 2 at Star Awards Show 2. During her acceptance speech, the veteran host expressed her gratitude for production company WaWa Pictures and all those who believed in her.
While speaking to the media, Yi Fong admitted that she had always felt that an info-ed programme host needed to be very “rational and intellectual”. Calling herself someone who is “stubborn and random”, the 41-year-old had not expected herself to snag the prize. However, she is heartened by the recognition given by the media and judging panel.
“I have never imagined myself to win an award in this category. I thought I was the weakest link with the least chances [of winning],” she said, adding that she had put her dollar on Pornsak to triumph.
Now that she has been acknowledged for her work in this field, will Yi Fong venture further into the “intellectual arena” in future?
“No, I prefer being random,” the glib-talker replied straightforwardly.
Last night, Yi Fong also scored her ninth “Top 10” trophy. On stage to receive the award, she excitedly expressed her thanks to her supportive aunt and her precious daughter Eleanor Lee. “I really want to enter the All-Time Favourite Artistes hall of fame!” she exclaimed.
For the second year in a row, Yi Fong’s red carpet number was designed by Eleanor. The dress allegedly took three months to complete because they had to add “more cloth” during the dress-making process.
Pornsak wishes to share his joy with late producer Chen Wencong
After a five-year wait, Pornsak finally bagged the “Best Variety Show Host” award for his affectionate performance on The Joy Truck 2. Speaking to reporters, the Thailand-born artiste claimed that he had been waiting for this day for years and that he has been revising his acceptance speech each time he failed to bring home the prize.
“I am happiest when I am hosting, therefore it is a dream come true for me,” the 33-year-old said. “I finally feel like a professional host after winning the award. With veterans Mark Lee and Quan Yi Fong around, my chances are always slim.”
Pornsak also thanked the production team who is like family to him. In his words, everyone looks out for one another in the variety department, which is why he invited the other four nominees on stage (where he was showered with kisses from Yi Fong and Lee Teng) during his acceptance speech.
In addition, Pornsak jokingly lamented that the faces plastered along the Walk of Fame all belonged to actors. “I hope the variety people will have more support from the company because we put in a lot of hard work and effort as well,” he explained. “Oh no, will I not win another award next year after saying that? (laughs)”
For Pornsak, celebrations will have to wait till he finishes his Traditional Chinese Medicine examination. His Left Profile boss Michelle Chong, who “does nothing but play with her phone” (according to Pornsak), may be in Canada right now, but she is said to have texted Pornsak right after he won the award.
“She messaged me: Let’s celebrate with champagne!” Pornsak chortled. “I’m looking forward to sharing my joy with Michelle when she returns.”
Not forgetting his elderly father, the most important figure in his life, Pornsak shared that he has yet to inform his dad who is currently in Thailand. However, the multi-lingual host said that his father has always been supportive of him, whether he wins an award or otherwise.
“Even though he completely doesn’t understand a single thing that I’m saying on my shows because he only speaks Teochew, he stays tuned to all my programmes which are broadcast in Thailand,” he said smiling.
Yet, the one person that Pornsak truly wishes to express his thanks to is the late Chen Wencong, former executive producer of Food Source. “He was the first person who said that I should win a hosting award. I didn’t manage to win the award before he passed away. No matter where he is now, I would like to share my happiness with him,” he reiterated.
