Jeanette Aw on her Best Actress award chances with The Dream Makers 2

The local thespian, who would star as Zhao Fei Er again in The Dream Makers 2, is not stressed about winning the Best Actress Award at next year’s Star Awards

Jeanette Aw on her Best Actress award chances with The Dream Makers 2

Brace yourself for more strife and struggles of high-level executives in the entertainment industry and mind-boggling relationships as Channel 8’s blockbuster The Dream Makers is set for a sequel this December.

Not only would our favourite roles exhibit their strong chemistry on screen again, The Dream Makers 2 would also see the addition of several veteran actors from both the local and foreign scene, like Huang Biren, Li Nanxing, Hong Kong actor Damian Lau and Taiwanese actress Chen Mei Feng.

Jeanette Aw would also grace our screens as Zhao Fei Er for the second time, a role in which she was praised for a breakthrough in her acting skills. She was nominated for the Best Actress Award at last year’s Star Awards with the role and eventually lost the title to Chen Liping.

Despite Jeanette emphasising that she did not mind her defeat, it became a hot topic of the show as it was also the sixth time the award has slipped out of her hands.

When asked if she feels the pressure to win the title this time, Jeanette shared at the imaging session for The Dream Makers 2 yesterday that she does not feel stressed about earning the recognition.

“(I have lost the award) for too many times. (laughs) I’m already used to it. It also isn’t a factor I have considered before I took on this role. I would never accept a role for the sake of winning an award as that would give me unnecessary stress,” she said.

Zhao Fei Er becomes a changed woman

Instead, Jeanette is excited as her role has evolved from a struggling actress to a top-notch ah jie.

To match Fei Er’s elevated status, the production team has also ‘upsized’ her wardrobe and we saw Jeanette trying on a total of eight outfits at the session on Monday. Not only that, Jeanette would also have to portray a more intricate character, as Fei Er has matured after going through numerous struggles to reach the top.

“In the first season, Zhao Fei Er was always able to keep her emotions under control even if she was facing a difficult time. However, she would change drastically in the second season as she would be betrayed by the ones she trust most,” she revealed.

Jeanette further explained that her character would suffer from depression and she has done some research on the characteristics and behaviour of depression patients to better portray her role.

“As I was a Psychology major in university, I am deeply interested in researching about such issues. Especially for my role, I need to understand the illness to bring out her character. I would not plan any predetermined interpretation of my role, but let my emotions dictate how I act. It is important that I bring out my emotions to touch the audience,” she shared.

Julie Tan learns how to be a taimei for her new role

On the other hand, MediaCorp’s up and rising actress Julie Tan would also star as a scriptwriter named “Dong Zi Huai” in the sequel, who is also Jeanette’s younger sister.

Commenting jokingly that Zoe Tay and Li Nanxing were her childhood idols, Julie shared that she is both anxious and excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with them in the show.

She has also began her preparation work for her role by watching Japanese drama and practicing her expressions while looking into a mirror.

As her character was brought up in Taiwan, Julie shared that she has made a trip to Taiwan to learn the tricks of being a taimei (Taiwanese ah lians). During her five-day trip, she had visited several coffee joints to observe the behaviour of Taiwanese women, like their speaking tone and their expressions.

“Taiwanese girls sound high-pitched and whiny when they speak. Even when I was shopping along the streets of Tamsui and Xi Men Ding, I kept observing people around me,” she said.

Shortly after, she even demonstrated what she meant. When praised by Toggle for sounding comfortable and natural in her interpretation of the voice of a taimei, Julie quipped, “I have friends in Taiwan, so I have gotten used to this way of speaking.”
