After bagging three awards (Rocket Award, Best Supporting Actress award and Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste award) at last year, Julie Tan walked out of last night’s Star Awards 2017 main ceremony empty-handed.

One would have expected her to pick up the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste award which she was also nominated for, after winning the award for two years running. It would have been her third win.

In backstage interviews about her absence from the popularity roster, the 24-year-old actress left members of the media shell-shocked when she announced this would be her “last Star Awards show,” and explained she will not be renewing her contract with Mediacorp when it expires in June.

She declined to reveal her future plans—whether she’d be staying in Singapore or expanding her acting career overseas—and promised to give everyone a proper update when the time comes.

Fans who are worried that upcoming mid-year blockbuster series The Lead would be the last you’ll see of her, rest easy. Julie assured that she will still be an artiste “because acting is still my dream.”

“After my studying stint overseas, I’ve changed. I can only say Julie Tan has changed and she’s no longer the same. But I’d still like to thank everyone for their support [towards me],” she said, during her interview.

Keeping her next move a secret for now, Julie added that she is still open to filming local drama series – “as long as Mediacorp has shows for me.”

Julie further revealed that she has been mulling over this decision since last year, after she won three awards at Star Awards 2016. “I wanted to see how far my career could go but something felt wrong,” she said, declining to elaborate on her answer.

Currently “at a crossroad” in life now, she also brought up an example of how she sat out of doing her GCE O-Level examinations seven years ago to study at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and eventually entered showbiz.

“I’m a person who thinks big and acts bold [and] of course, the company treats me really well too – but I think it’s time to go on a different path.”

“No matter where I am, I’ll continue working hard because opportunities will always be for those who are prepared.”

When asked if she had any words to say to her fans, she replied: “You guys have done your best for me, please do not be upset and do not cry. I do not wish to see you guys cry.

“A bigger stage awaits for me.”

All the best, Julie!
