What’s new in Star Awards 2017?

Same same but different: A revamped show format and changes to this year’s award presentation

Star Awards 2016's Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste Award winners

Awards season is heating up and that can only mean one thing: Star Awards 2017 is upon us - in three months’ time to be exact.

Unlike previous years’ Star Awards, which saw the show being separated into two award ceremonies over two weekends, there will only be one main ceremony on April 16 this year. It will be accompanied by a “live” red carpet segment, Walk of Fame, on the same day and preceded by a three-episode weekly ‘countdown’ specials.

Apart from the awards ceremony, the online voting categories will be streamlined too, with more emphasis placed on the Top 10 Most Popular Male and Female Artiste awards.

The online Favourite award categories such as the Favourite Male and Female Character awards and Favourite Onscreen Couple award will be dropped so that fans can focus on online voting for the ‘Most Popular’ category instead.

The Social Media Award, whose former winners include Jeanette Aw and Carrie Wong, will also not be given out this year, as the methodology is determined by the growth of supporters which overlaps with the Top 10 Most Popular Award.

Due to a switch in measurement of TV viewership, the Top Rated Variety Programme and Top Rated Drama Serial will not be included in this year’s Star Awards too. Lastly, technical awards such as Best Set Design, Best Cameraman and Best Editing will be presented at an off-site awards ceremony, like last year, and will not be televised as part of the show.
