Mystery 1

There are a total of three seasons of Mystery and its first season, which is a tapestry of eight short stories, remains one of the most-talked about local supernatural shows to date - and for good reason.

One of Mystery’s short stories, ‘Butterfly,’ triggered a collective fear for butterflies in 90s kids who grew up watching the show (this writer, included). Long story short, the female lead (played by Madeline Chu) developed a strange ageing disease—and an irrational fear for butterflies—after suffering multiple attacks (and bites) by the winged creatures. The story was equal parts haunting and creepy and butterflies were never seen in the same light again.

Shadows in the Dark

For those nostalgic about old Channel 8 dramas produced in the 90s, this series is for you.

Many moons ago, when Mediacorp still made Chinese supernatural shows, a then-nubile Zoe Tay played dual roles of a wrongfully murdered ghost and her living daughter in Shadows in the Dark. Innocent lives are lost when said aggrieved mother ghost, who resides in a different dimension in a haunted mansion, goes on a killing spree to nab the killer who took her life 15 years ago.

It’s a campy trip down memory lane with in-your-face special effects – and a nice reminder about the good ol’ days. PS: Expect nothing less from the drama with a Mandarin title that translates to ‘the most haunted mansion’ in English.

Romance in the 7th month

The mid-90s saw an abundance of supernatural-esque romance telemovies being produced by the TV station too and one such production, Romance in the 7th Month, featured a 25-year-old Chor Meng and 19-year-old ingénue Cynthia Koh.

The former played a ghost who fell in love with a getai performer (Cynthia) when their paths crossed after she picked up his pocket watch. Disaster struck when she tried to reunite him with his dad, which she eventually did, but not without leaving us a heartbreaking twist at the end of it (hint: he floats, she doesn’t). Sniffle.

A short (and pretty sweet) story (it’s less than 90 minutes long!) between the living and the “dead,” this telemovie remains one of Chor Meng’s favourite productions to date because it featured him in his best-looking years.
