No crying or screaming, minimal fussing around, and no fear of the large crowd and many camera lenses on him – we’d say little Aden Chen, son of local artistes Andie Chen and Kate Pang, did pretty well for his very first media conference.

The adorable 18-month-old toddler and his parents met reporters at Blisshouse Restaurant on Wednesday (Jan 13) to introduce their upgraded online portal Kandie Network (Kandie, of course, being a portmanteau of Andie and Kate’s names), where they will upload weekly clips sharing their parenting and pregnancy experiences.

Social media users would be more than familiar with baby Aden, who makes frequent appearances on Andie’s and Kate’s respective Instagram accounts and even has a page of his own. However, in an interview with Toggle, Andie, 30, said that his son doesn’t quite understand his fame and probably thinks all the attention he gets is “normal”.

“He’s very open and warm to strangers – he’ll say hello to aunties at the supermarket and hold their hands and go around making friends with everyone,” he elaborated, as his wife added, “And when it’s time to say goodbye he’s very reluctant and will keep looking back at them! It makes all the aunties very happy.”

With family reality programmes such as The Return of Superman and Dad! Where Are We Going? being all the rage now, Andie revealed – after Kate’s quip that parents who are featured have to be “famous enough” – that they are “open to possibilities” about appearing in such shows. “But we have to see what Aden wants; if he starts to feel uncomfortable (with all this attention) then we have to reconsider, but for now it’s very enjoyable.”

An update on baby no. 2 and their new home

The Chen clan won’t be a brood of three for very long: Kate is due to give birth to a daughter in end-June (around the same time as big brother Aden’s own birthday). The good news was announced just months after she suffered a tragic miscarriage.

“The first three months of my pregnancy were much harder, but now it’s more comfortable,” the enviably radiant and slender 32-year-old mummy shared. One challenge, though, is making sure Aden doesn’t accidentally kick Kate’s stomach, as the brood currently shares a bed and a room in Andie’s family’s home.

This will no longer be a problem when the bunch moves into their own place in the north, which is currently under renovation, in April (if all goes well). Although Kate looks forward to having more space, she admitted that she will miss having Andie’s relatives around, especially since Aden is able to pick up many lessons and languages from them before even starting school.

Andie has understandably been a very anxious and protective father throughout both Kate’s expectancy and their flat’s facelift. While she doesn’t do any heavy physical work around the house, he expressed his concern that she might inhale some toxic fumes from all the construction mess. He also makes sure to check for his unborn baby’s heartbeat every day to make sure everything is all right.

“We’re even more careful because of our last experience (with the miscarriage); when you really want something, it’s natural to be anxious,” said Andie. Kate expressed that she believes things will turn out fine, “but we are still worried”.

Aden, on the other hand, is clearly looking forward to meeting his little sister – so much so that he won’t even let his mother use to the toilet, shower or go to sleep because he insists on sticking with her. “Whenever I ask him where his little sister is, he will rub and kiss my belly,” she smiled. (Now isn’t that the cutest!)

Kate would consider giving up her career?

The day of the press conference also marked the official unveiling of the upgraded Kandie Network, which started out as a YouTube channel in November 2014 and now sports a full-fledged website of its own. Andie revealed that they originally intended to postpone the launch because of his busy schedule (he’s currently filming Channel 8 drama If Only I Could), but Kate’s rapidly expanding belly spurred them into earlier action.

When asked how much they invested into the project, Andie said that it was “definitely a five-digit sum”, but that they had a lot of help from friends in the industry. “We hope to keep things very contact-oriented, which is why we’re very selective about who we work with,” Andie elaborated, adding that they will eventually have advertisers on board to generate revenue.

But everything is all worth it: in addition to being able to provide other new parents with advice and helpful tips (either from their own experiences or shared by experts), the best part of all is that Andie gets to work with his family.

With so many things for Kate to juggle (a bun in the oven, a feisty child, a parenting portal, a new house and her career), how does she manage it all? With an exaggerated pout and look of pity, she turned to her husband and wailed, “Hubby, I’m so tired!” Jokes aside, she assured us that so far she’s able to handle it, but if she were to sacrifice something, it would be work.

Andie, who would obviously become the sole breadwinner of the family if this were to happen, feigned a look of mock horror and exclaimed, “This is the first time I’m hearing this. I’m in trouble! (laughs)”

Singer and Kandie Network’s website designer Cai Ai Jia is getting married!

Three friends the couple has employed to help with the new portal are singers Juno Lin and Jacky Chew, who shoot the videos, and Campus Superstar 3 runner-up Cai Ai Jia, who designed the website.

Ai Jia, who also represented Singapore in Taiwan’s One Million Star and TVB Hong Kong’s Singing Championship, was recently revealed to have accepted her boyfriend’s proposal last Christmas, and they will make her 83-year-old grandmother’s wish come true by registering their marriage on April 27 this year (which is her 22nd birthday). Ai Jia’s fiancé is a Navy serviceman four years her senior and they have been dating for about eight to nine months. The couple plans to enjoy married life as a twosome before expanding their family three to five years down the road.
