After a two-year break from local TV (his last show here was The Dream Makers II), Qi Yuwu is making his comeback to Singapore screens with Channel 8’s Mind Matters. The 40-year-old will play a former psychiatrist who ends up temporarily losing his sanity like his patients.

In an interview with Toggle at yesterday’s imaging session for the drama, Yuwu explained that he took up this project because he wanted to show a different side of himself to viewers. “Since I’m making less shows in Singapore lately, I want every role I take here to make people think, ‘I didn’t know Qi Yuwu could do that!’” he said.

We got a glimpse of his character’s contrasting appearances at the studio. At first, Yuwu looked sharp in dress shirts and leather shoes (the getup for his doctor days), before getting a make-under and emerging in faded clothes and a messy wig.

Yuwu told us that he originally intended to grow out his hair for the part, but when he saw that the wig was drier and more unkempt than his real tresses could ever be, he decided to go with the prop instead. The beard, on the other hand, is entirely his own, but he admitted that he’s not exactly fond of it – and neither is his daughter “Baby Qi”, who turns two in August.

“She will go ‘eee!’ [and try to get away from me when I kiss her],” he chuckled, mimicking the toddler’s actions of trying to avoid her dad’s prickly smooch. “I would do the same if I were her; sometimes I myself can’t stand it!”

That wasn’t the only adorable anecdote he shared about his little girl, his oldest of two kids with wife Joanne Peh. When asked what her personality is like, Yuwu revealed that although Baby Qi is shy around strangers at first, she shows a completely different side once you get to know her better.

“She’ll sing, dance and talk very loudly; she’s so cute and lively,” gushed the proud papa with a grin. “She’s also a very thoughtful little girl. For example, when she accidentally hits Joanne while they’re playing, she’ll become very solemn as if she’s aware she did something wrong, and then gently touch the area she struck while saying, ‘Pain, pain’.” Awww.

That’s not all: despite her young age, Baby Qi is already an affectionate sibling to two-month-old “Qi di di”. “Sometimes, when we’re busy doing other things, she will come up to us and speak on her brother’s behalf, saying we should go and cuddle him,” Yuwu said. “I think she already has a clear understanding of the fact [that she’s a big sister now].”

With so much warmth and love at home, it’s no wonder Yuwu pretended to burst into tears when he talked about leaving his family for Beijing again to start work on a new film after shooting for Mind Matters wraps in September.

Well, we’re sure he’ll spend these three precious months spending lots of time with his brood, taking pictures and uploading them to social media – with his children’s faces strategically hidden, of course.

Speaking of social media, we got Yuwu to take us “behind the scenes” of several family photos that have been posted on his or Joanne’s Instagram accounts. Click through for more!

“We went to buy vegetables at the Pasir Panjang Wholesale Market, and our daughter was very curious and fascinated by all the produce around her. When we got home, she was suddenly willing to eat grapes, which she used to dislike! I also remember her playing peekaboo with her mother using the cover of her pram. (smiles)”

“We ran into a couple of friends at the Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the National Gallery one evening, so we decided to do something fun since the art gives off a whimsical, happy vibe. I wasn’t sure what to do so I just simply did this! (laughs) Only our son was there with us, but he was sleeping the entire time.”

“I felt a bit calmer during this birth because I already had some experience, but I was still very careful and anxious that something could potentially go wrong, but of course I was more relaxed than the first time.”

“This picture (the announcement of Joanne’s second pregnancy) was very hard to take because Baby Qi refused to cooperate! I forgot how many shots we took, but it took a while before we got the right one. We asked her to put her feet like this, but she wouldn’t stop moving. We had a lot of NGs (no good takes)! (laughs)”

“I brought [Joanne and Baby Qi] to the Forbidden City when they visited me in Beijing. We climbed to the top of the highest hill there for a better view, and I carried Baby Qi on my shoulders because the barricade was too high for her. I don’t know if she appreciated the scenery, but I think she enjoyed being carried like that. We also changed her diaper on a trishaw and took some pictures! (laughs)”

“We brought Baby Qi to Sentosa, and it was her first time at the beach. She was a little afraid of the waves, so we hugged her very tightly so she would feel secure while being able to feel the sand and sea beneath her feet. Now she’s no longer scared.”

“[As a new father], I was very nervous at that time and I wasn’t sure what I should do. I was so worried I wouldn’t know how to help my wife, or that I would forget to bring something to the hospital!”
